Marine surrenders to police to end six-hour standoff

June 13,2005

CHRIS MAZZOLINI DAILY NEWS STAFF

A Camp Lejeune Marine surrendered to Jacksonville police Sunday morning after a six-hour standoff at his New River Drive residence during which he threatened to harm himself.

The Marine, whose identity was not released, walked out of the house at 187 New River Drive in the Town Center Apartment Homes and surrendered to police at about 9 a.m., following hours of conversation with a crisis negotiator, said Jacksonville Deputy Police Chief David Shipp.

Jacksonville police then transferred custody of the 21-year-old serviceman over to Camp Lejeune authorities. According to base spokesman Lt. Clark Carpenter, no charges have been filed at this time and the Marine, who was identified as being with 2nd Force Service and Support Group, will be evaluated by medical professionals.

"We are relieved and appreciative that the professionals at the Jacksonville Police Department were able to resolve the situation peacefully," Carpenter said.

The situation began around 3 a.m., after police received information from the Marine's father and brother, who called from Virginia. The family told police that the individual was threatening to harm himself and three pets, Shipp said. The family also told police that he had recently returned from Iraq.

"They had been communicating with him and they were concerned about his welfare," Shipp said.

The police activated its SWAT team and were in place around the residence at about 3:20 a.m. Shipp said patrol officers established a perimeter around the house to block traffic and worked at evacuating nearby residents. Two crisis negotiators were called in to help.

Shipp would not go into detail on how the primary negotiator, Detective Len Condry, coaxed the man from the house.

"(Condry) was in communication with the individual for several hours," Shipp said. "And he made a decision to walk outside the residence."

While the man was handed over to military authorities, Shipp said a police investigation will continue.

The pets, a dog and two cats, were discovered dead when police entered the residence. Shipp did not confirm how the animals died, but did say that no shots were fired during the standoff.

Police found and collected at least one pistol and some long guns inside the house. Shipp said it did not appear that any of the guns were military issue.

"Fortunately, we were able to bring it to an end," Shipp said. "But if we needed to stay there, we would've stayed as long as possible."

How awful! And it appears that he killed his pets. What a scumbag. I hope he gets the professional help he needs and they throw his butt in the brig.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge ... the Marine tour
is Iraq is no picnic and who really knows what demons torment him as a result ... ?

I know it's no picnic, but there are counseling services available to all military members and he should have gotten some help when he got back. So you think it's all right that he probably killed his pets?

You are awful quick to judge, have you ever been in combat? If so do you think talking to someone about just makes it all better?
I agree it's to bad for that pets, but no HUMANS got killed or injured, My family has several pets and we love them very much but to call someone who risked it all to protect your privilege to call him a "scumbag" a "scumbag" is over the top.

No, I've never been in combat, as women are prohibited from participating, but I proudly served my country anyway. I know that talking about problems doesn't always make it instantly better but this guy knew he was having problems and he should have gotten some help for them sooner, rather taking things to this extreme. No matter how bad my personal problems have been, I've never considered barricading myself in my house and killing my pets.

I think that it is funny you jumped to the conclusion that this Marine killed his own pets. Did you stop to think that maybe the reason he went off was because his pets died/were killed by other than by him? No you just went straight to the jugular calling him a scumbag.
You then whine about the fact that he should have gotten counseling via the military. Since you said that you DID serve, then you should already know that counseling provided by the DOD for Military members is not in any shape or form confidential. Even if you need to vent to someone who wants their dirty laundry gossiped about base? Which it does, the civilian workers who work in the offices and do most of the counseling do not know how to keep their mouths shut.
Who wants to go get help anyways when the second word gets back to your unit that you are going to counseling you are designated Section 8 and will be under the microscope, even getting passed over for promotion because you may have "issues". Your ranting on this Marine is reprehensible. I think that one ought to look in the mirror before labeling others.

I gotta agree with the others on this thread. Obviously the guy's having some issues, and given the probability they're stemming from his tour in Iraq there's great potential for serious psychological trauma to overcome.

Who knows what the pets have to do with it but it doesn't seem like he's torturing animals for fun or anything. Yes animals are nice but they're not people and despite this Marine's problems he's still together enough that nobody got hurt.

If you read my replies in #s 2 and 4, I wrote that it "appears" and that he "probably" killed his pets. I didn't say that he did. However, in the story, his family says that he threatened to harm his pets and harm himself.

Yes, I know that people gossip and it might have gotten back to his unit that he was having problems, but that's the chance he should have taken to get his issues dealt with, rather than putting people's lives at risk, including his own.

I don't doubt that. Firemen, policemen and all others who are first responders have some very bad issues to deal with, while they work to keep us safe. I'm just saying that he should have taken the chance with MWR or whomever and gotten some help before it reached this stage. Obviously, his family tried to talk to him and it didn't work out. There's an article in today's Post about how some military members are coping with the trauma of what they see and do over there.

Which makes it probable he killed them, but you don't know he did. You are assuming. I wouldn't scold anyone for advancing hypothesis given the fact that you don't know what happened either.

"What a scumbag"

I hope for their sake no one in your family ever has mental illness or emotional problems. You seem seem pretty cold and unforgiving.
