When Democrats and Republicans become so strikingly similar that distinguishing them requires much imagination and strong drink, it's time to ask where do conservatives (in media lingo that's code for Christian "right" et al., and vice versa) turn?
There's been a "raging" battle between the red and blue "staters," but now it's time to get serious, the differences are not so much real as imagined. "Large-mouthed" talk plus seas of ink are spilt over the great divisions in society but the fact is, latter-day Republicans or RINOs (Republican In Name Only), have been knocking themselves out trying to "out democrat" the Democrats. So what's with all the noise about the great divide?
The list is long and rife with Democrat swill morphed into Republican philosophy and candidates. A case in point is the local congressional district where the republican US Representative was a Democrat until days before he seized the opportunity to unseat a politically wounded Republican in the State Legislature. But rather than have the integrity to run as what he was, a man who arguably voted for Bill Clinton not once but twice, with chameleon-like speed he morphed into a conservative Republican. The Republican Party then quickly anointed him as "the chosen one" to fill out the term of the resigning congressional Republican incumbent.
Opportunism has pervaded politics from its origins and has been both its blessings and its curse. Today, the Achilles heel of the Republican Party is the fact that it has abandoned its legacy and moral authority, and is distancing itself from the principles upon which it was voted into majority status. Unless it begins to behave as the majority party, in a manner consistent with its platform's guiding principles, it will succeed in accomplishing what Democrats have been unable to accomplish for a decade; and that would be a "hell-of-a" self-inflicted wound.
There is a plethora of political alternatives but those have insufficient resources and too small a following to make a dent. The only way for another party to reach critical mass is wholesale abandonment of the major parties by the conservatives in both; (despite considerable misgiving the writer supposes that there are genuine conservatives in the "Democrat" Party); and knows a host of betrayed conservatives in the Republican Party. However, there is no rising conservative party anywhere on the horizon to absorb them, one that is sufficient broadly based that would rise to national status with meaning.
Unfortunately, the entire Democrat establishment is awash in anti-Christian diatribe; witness its leaders' expressions of derision. Likewise, unless the Republican Party gets a "grip," it will be headed down the same path to perdition as its erstwhile "opponent." The time is growing close for a strong conservative party to emerge from the incipient ashes of both major parties.
The Germans came up with "Christian Democrats" in Hitler's wake but in the US, "Christian Democrat" would be an oxymoron. Further, Howard Dean, with his flaming anti-Christian rhetoric erases any hope of Christians openly embracing the Democrat Party by any other name. Even Edwards and Biden have attempted to distance themselves from Dean's remarks, but "Satan" once committed is unlikely to back off. "Flush" one Koran and the media, ACLU, and Democrats go "nuts," but burn down a Christian library and this writer's money says that they would remain silent if not cheer. Unfortunately, Republicans increasingly lack the moral authority to chastise them.

"Unfortunately, Republicans increasingly lack the moral authority to chastise them. "
Except for the criticism, I note that the author didn't have any ideas to contribute AND I find his statement a bit ambiguous.
During the Clinton era, the Democrats were loose cannons, in league with the Devil, himself. Now it's become a way of life for them. Everything they accuse us of (like Dean has) is what they are doing.
I think Bush and the Conservatives have the right idea; that LESS government keeps "Big Brother" out of our lives.
This guy sounds like just another third party wacko who believes that members of his third party are the Republicans and that members of the Republican party are something else.
I'm no fan of the ACLU but I doubt anyone will cheer the burning of a Christian library. Lots of hyperbole in this article. Very little substance.
