Churchill files complaint on accuser
Denver Post ^ | 6/9/05 | Arthur Kane

University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill, who has been accused of intimidating people who disagreed with him, has filed an academic-fraud complaint against one of the professors who accused him of misconduct.

Churchill's complaint, alleging that Lamar University assistant sociology professor Thomas Brown committed research misconduct, arrived Tuesday. The complaint alleges misconduct in the research Thomas conducted to dispute Churchill's work.

Churchill also called Lamar University's provost, the arts and sciences school dean and the chairman of the sociology department, saying he would file a complaint against Brown, said university spokesman Brian Sattler. Lamar is in Beaumont, Texas.

"He was making charges against him, taking issue with the accusations that (Brown) made," Sattler said.

Brown, who has questioned Churchill's assertion that the U.S. Army purposefully infected Indians with smallpox, said the complaint is Churchill's attempt to block Brown from submitting a more detailed analysis of problems with Churchill's academic work.

"It looks as if he's trying to intimidate me into silence about my research on the 1837 smallpox epidemic, but how he expects such a spurious complaint to be effective for him is beyond my comprehension," Brown wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Denver Post on Wednesday. "I suspect he's acting from a revenge instinct."

Churchill attorney David Lane confirmed that his client filed a complaint but disputed that he was trying to silence Brown.

"There are independent investigators who will fully and fairly investigate the complaint," Lane said.

The University of Colorado's Standing Committee on Research Misconduct is considering an allegation by Brown that Churchill's writings on genocide by the U.S. Army against the Indians are contrary to the sources Churchill has used. Churchill has disputed Brown's statement, saying he has additional information that backs up his research.

Churchill's complaint against Brown, dated June 3, was not immediately available as Lamar University administrators were reviewing it to decide whether it warrants investigation. And Brown said he would not receive a copy until Friday.

Churchill's work came under scrutiny after his comments comparing some 9/11 victims to a Nazi leader became widely publicized. During the investigation that followed the comments, several people alleged Churchill had threatened them after they disputed his work or crossed him in another way.

Dalhousie University professor Fay G. Cohen charged that Churchill threatened her after she complained about his using her essay without permission or credit.

A former CU journalism professor also said Churchill threatened her when they clashed over what to name a dormitory.

Churchill has consistently denied threatening anyone, saying his enemies are coming forward for publicity or to damage his reputation.

Amazing thing about this guy: he expects to be taken seriously by true academics, not just college students going through their passing infatuation with leftwing kookery and those like him who never outgrew that phase of life.

This accusation circles around the 1837 Smallpox episode. The truth is that no one is very sure about anything. Smallpox was still a unknown disease in the mid-1800s...and your rate of survival was not that great...didn't matter if you were white or Indian. Churchill has always considered that the blankets given to the Indians carried the disease to the Indians...which might be fairly true...although you can't say that the Army intentionally did that. No one could sit there and pinpoint the transfer of the disease via clothing or blankets at that point in time. One could make that accusation 150 years later...but it doesn't really explain what was really happening in 1837.

I think it was a strategic blunder. Someone who files an academic fraud charge against a colleague who has critiqued his work in a sober and scholarly fashion comes across as spectacularly vindictive. IOW as precisely the kind of person who is capable of calling Fay Cohen late at night and threatening her over the article that is now the focus of the plagiarism allegations. Which IMO are the ones most likely to sink this guy's boat.

That "Level of Maturity" that you point out is so prevelent in generation of the "Flower Children"! I believe they are still asking each other the same question: "Are You Going to SanFrancisco". Ward Churchill is really playing out his "Indian Heritage" act to the hilt even though he is a fraud on that point also!

I am still waiting the University of Colorado's response to my aplication for full professorship........my qualifications as a fake indian are far better than Churchill's. Since I am not in the running, I would ask that any and all brother Freepers apply for the position.

I've said over and over - academic fraud and plagiarism are the unforgivable sins of academia. If Churchill goes down (which I think he will), academic fraud will be the reason why.

Your defense of Churchill is unpersuasive. Churchill says he has sources that back up his side of the story, but his sources say no such thing. So he's just making up charges with no basis -- that's not "scholarship," even in the realm of "ethnic studies." It's fiction writing, or slander.

As far as I know, the best research into Churchill's handling of the smallpox matter is here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1417790/posts.

To me, this article seems complete and completely damning of Churchill. I don't know if you're familiar with this, or if you have any positive or negative reaction to the conclusions in the article.

I don't know if he'll go down or not.

If you've watched video of this guy, you can see that intimidation is his number one academic credential.

I don't know if the wusses of academia have the guts to go up against this guy.

Churchill obviously believes that the best defense is a good offense, and why not he has been doing it for years and getting away with it.

I don't know about that...I think it would be hard to beat Churchill's qualifications as a fake Indian.

Churchill is a BSer wrapped in the protective blanket of victim status (his supposed Native American descent). The blanket has been ripped away and all you have left is a BSer. Unfortunately, he still fits in the majority of liberal professors on American campuses.
