Man with concealed-carry permit shoots gunman

By Kelli Wynn

Dayton Daily News

DAYTON | Two men carrying guns approached a 40-year-old man at Riverview Avenue and Catalpa Drive early Friday. Their victim bent over with outstretched hands.

Then things changed swiftly.

The targeted man pulled out a Glock 23 handgun — he has a concealed-carry permit — and fired several shots, hitting one of the gunmen, police said.

Police were dispatched to the 2000 block of West Riverview at about 12:45 a.m. on numerous calls about a shooting.

Police found the 40-year-old male victim at his Dayton residence. He told them that he was walking west on Riverview when he was approached by two males in dark clothing coming from Catalpa. One shoved the victim, the victim turned around and both men in dark clothes flashed handguns, police said.

The victim then "began to back away in a bent-over position with his hands outstretched," according to a police report. Then he pulled out a Glock 23, a .40-caliber handgun, striking one gunman several times, police said.

The two ran off, but police said they caught up with possible suspects at Good Samaritan Hospital.

The victim has both a Dayton Firearms Owner's Identification Card and Montgomery County Concealed Carry Card, police said.

The victim will likely be:

1) Vilified by the local press for defending himself

2) Criticized by the cops for not waiting for them to arrive and handle the situation

3) Thrown in jail for "excessive use of force"

4) Successfully sued by the criminals for causing them "pain & suffering."

Not really, they are still breathing.

Don't forget the interviews with the perps, who are the "real victims" of this heinous event.

It did the most important job -- the innocent man is still breathing.

Wait for the race of the perps to be disclosed...

This could get ugly.

I hate stories with a sad ending...
...now, you will have the honor student turned robber that was shot will now sue the 40yr old 'aggressor' and his ambulance chaser lawyer is gonna make out.

Why couldn't there be a happy ending where one robber is dead, and the other is expected to make a tortuous recovery.

Don't be so pessimistic, Kelli properly identified who was the victim and who was the perp. I'm impressed with the writer and the editor. I know, it's a low standard, but considering how poorly they usually do...

No one can blame him for not waiting around if he thought his life was still in danger. But he can be blamed if he failed to notify the police as soon as possible after the incident.

If he thinks that there are two armed felons running around the streets, he has a moral responsibility to call it in.

True, and no doubt he will face a law suit from those still breathing.

I've always thought that cell phones and concealed handguns make a nice pair. They don't really talk about it in the article (aside from mentioning that the police found the guy at his residence). He certainly had a responsibility to call this in (and it may turn out that he did, or that police arrived before he had a chance to) when he was free from danger.

4) Successfully sued by the criminals for causing them "pain & suffering."

When they show up in court, they'll have Hearts and Flowers playing in the background and a cheering section of their maggot friends in the peanut gallery.

Dead men tell no tales.

The perp made it to the hospitol? Ditch the .40 Short and Weak and up it to a 10mm with full house hollow points.

Funny thing is, I am so used to the left wing spin on these stories that I naturally assumed that the "victim" was the perp who was shot. The MSM rarely seems to refer to the person defending themselves as a victim.
