Night-Vision Goggles Help Seatbelt Campaign

POSTED: 12:36 pm EDT June 2, 2005

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- The "Click It or Ticket" campaign is getting some high-tech help in suburban Washington.

Maryland State Police are using a military tool to make sure drivers buckle up.

Officers had night vision goggles on Rockville Pike outside the nation's capital last night to look inside darkened cars. Police said they can see from a distance whether drivers have their seat belts fastened.

*snip*

Maryland authorities said they issued 111 citations Wednesday night as part of the campaign.

Rockville, Md. (AP) - Maryland State Police are using a military tool in the battle against seat belt violators.

They're using night vision goggles to find people who don't buckle up after dark. Police say 40 percent of drivers don't use their seat belts at night, making the roads much more dangerous after sunset. Police in Maryland are among 13,000 agencies nationwide that are now using the goggles.

Seat belt laws - the greatest law enforcement fundraising tool ever.

The goggles pay for themselves after the first 20 traffic stops.

Do people on motorcycles get tickets? What about kids on buses?

Damn sometimes living in Maryland really pisses me off.

Or as the State Police official told me shortly after the crackdown on racial profiling, seatbelt laws are a new way to pull people over and search their cars.
Even the cops know that seatbelts often won't save you and sometimes they will cause your death.

Hey they tried to pass an SUV tax last week $350 for owning an SUV, It almost got through.

And Ehrlich vetoed a domestic partners bill week before that.

Move to Virginia. We need all the conservative help we can get. The liberal control freaks are slowly taking over Northern Virginia.

I dont' agree with the govt applying fines to people for refusing to wear a seatbelt. If they happen to die in an auto accident that should be penalty enough for their ignorance.

Seat Belts, a Nils Bohlin (a Volvo engineer) invention...

A person weighing 105 lbs travelling in a vehicle moving at 40 mph in an impact will have the force of 4200 lbs upon impacting car surfaces or objects outside the vehicle.

Things I like about Maryland: You can go from the mountians to the bay to the ocean in about 5 hours. Blue Crabs. Our Governor. Lacrosse. The O's hon. The Ravens. M-A-R-Y-L-A-N-D. Maryland. The Eastern Shore. The Western two counties. My increasingly conservative county. Long hunting seasons. Liberal limits on hunting. Unfortunatly that is not hunting for liberals, just liberal regulations, in a good way :) Rockfish, crabbing. Maryland crab soup. My family. My friends.

If Colorado had an ocean or bay, I would move there. Hawaii is too expensive. So I am staying put.

I heard the local police departments got the money to buy this equipment from the Department for Homeland Defense to fight the war on terrorism. I am searching to verify this.
If it is true, don't you feel bad about yourself being a unbuckled terrorist?
