I once did a research paper on the Great Groucho. From what I learned, while he was a lefty in the twenties and thirties, he gradually became disillusioned with the Hollywood left, particularly those who embraced Communnism. In fact, he once said that he could not take seriously those pink screenwriters who sang "Let the People Arise" while doing laps in their pools in Beverly Hills." As an old man, he said in an interview that if someone was so crazy about Communism, then let them go "over there and live."
Most of the artists who had love affairs with Marxism in the first half of the 20th century generally came to their sense later on. (John Dos Passos, Richard Wright...) Most of them would be moderate liberals today if not conservatives.
Thank you.
Harpo Marx was sent to Russia by FDR at the time he was preparing to recognize that government (11/1933). In his "auto"biography (yeah, so it was ghost written; but all Hollywood biographies are!) he explicitly mentions having to view an anti-religious propaganda play. While he said he had never been a religious person, the tastelessness of that play still made him sick. He also pointed out that Communist Russia was not a free country.
The political orientation of the Marx Brothers saddens me, but I still love their stuff!
Hey, at least Zeppo invented military equipment!
