Karachi - Six people were burnt alive when a mob protesting a suicide bombing of a mosque torched an outlet of an American fast food chain in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi, police said on Tuesday.

Police and firemen recovered the bodies of six Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) employees after an angry mob set the restaurant on fire late on Monday following a suicide attack on a Shiite Muslim mosque here that left five people dead.

"Their bodies were found during the search of KFC," city police chief Tariq Jamil said.

Four of the victims at the restaurant were burned to death while the two others froze to death after taking refuge in a refrigeration unit at the restaurant, senior police official Manzoor Mughal said.

Three attackers stormed the minority Shiite Madinat-ul-Ilm mosque in the middle-class Gulshan neighbourhood during evening prayers late on Monday.

One of the assailants died in a gunbattle with police while the other blew himself up and the third sustained a serious head injury in a fall, Jamil said.

Hospital officials said the man was unconscious but in stable condition.

Police believe his survival could be the key to the investigation into suicide bombings.

Two worshippers and one policeman also died in the attack, while 21 people, four of whom were in a critical condition, were hospitalised.

Angry protesters went on the rampage after the attack, setting fire to two gas stations and a number of vehicles in addition to the KFC outlet.

It is unclear why the restaurant was targeted, although it is heavily associated with the United States. and rioters in Pakistan typically attack symbols of Washington while on a rampage. Anti-US feeling grew in Pakistan after President General Pervez Musharraf allied the country with Washington in the war on terror after September 11 2001.

The attack on the mosque came just three days after 19 people, most of them Shiites, died in a suicide bomb blast at a Muslim shrine near the capital Islamabad.

Thousands of Shiite and majority Sunni Muslims have been killed in sectarian bloodshed in Pakistan in recent years, with attacks including bomb blasts, suicide bombings and targeted killings. Last year 160 people were killed.

Wasn't this the peace loving readers of the Quran that Representative Conyers, Dem, Michigan, wants to write protection of into US law? Could he possibly be wrong about them?

Maybe CAIR just sent him a big enough check for his Protect the Quran resolution.

I am confused.

Understatement of the year here at the KFC in Karachi, where islamist militancy once again reared it dastardly, satanic head today:

and rioters in Pakistan typically attack symbols of Washington while on a rampage.

Oh, of course. Very logical of them.

I also like the casual inclusion of "while on a rampage," which sort of sounds like "while on vacation," "while at the beach," etc. Just a normal activity.

Just a bunch of normal Pakistani kids--by the looks of it, engineering college students probably trying to make something of their lives for their family and country--having chicken in peace at KFC in Karachi--bothering nobody. (Photo here for effect, photo not of victims).

Oh how I abhor this satanic islamist fascism for striking down innocent people like these fellows for NO REASON, other than they are not Muslim and happen to be enjoying a meal in an American or American-like establishment overseas.

The only thing to say is I guess I'd rather freeze to death than to burn to death.

Actually this story doesn't sound too different from the events in Detroit back in 1967 and '68.

Even muslims could be victims. E.g., these two Paki guys here, with rather Muslim-sounding names, also in the KFC Karachi for a meal in peace. Could have been in there when such an attack occured. (photo in Karachi KFC, not of victims).

Who's to know who is Muslim or not during a store burning with a molotov cocktail hurled from a distance or a bomb placed in there under a table?

We must stamp out islamofascist terrorism wherever it is. Many muslims (think of all the bombings by terrorist fanatics in Iraq of police stations and government centers where muslims work or line up for work) are also victims. I have a new found hatred of Islamofascism this morning folks. I hope you share it.

Thanks for your comments. I'm with you on our fighting this war without any political correctness as I fear shades of Vietnam creeping in. Many associates of mine who once favored the war are shaky now on continuing on. It is frightening to see the media reports and they are having a cumulative effect. I'd like to see the USA drop a few larger bombs on problem areas and show the might we really have.
