'NIGHTLINE' KOPPEL TO READ NAMES OF SERVICEMEN KILLED OVER LAST YEAR
DRUDGE ^ | 5/24/05

Posted on 05/24/2005 11:33:01 AM PDT by areafiftyone

One year since honoring the American service men and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, Ted Koppel and ABC News “Nightline” will again pay tribute to the fallen by devoting an extended broadcast to reading the names and showing the photographs of more than 900 service members who have been killed in those countries over the last year. Entitled “The Fallen,” the special “Nightline” broadcast will air Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2005 at 11:35 p.m. ET on the ABC Television Network. ABC News Radio will air excerpts of the program.

Last year on April 30, 2004, “Nightline” honored the 721 service men and women killed in action and in non-hostile situations in Iraq since the start of the war there. Less than a month later on May 26, 2004, the program paid tribute to the122 service members killed in the war on terror since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001. Monday’s program will honor those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and whose names have been released by the Defense Department since last year’s broadcasts.

“Nightline” will show a photograph of each service man and woman in succession with his/her name, military branch, rank and age, while Mr. Koppel reads their names aloud. In order to include each name and face, “Nightline” will be extended from 30 to about 45 minutes. Many of the photographs featured in the program are being provided by The Military Times Media Group, publishers of Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times.

Does anyone ever watch Nightline? I don't know anyone who bothers to watch that show. But this should make the DUers very happy.

I really believe that the parents or spouse of the dead person should have the option of their loved one's name being read for propaganda purposes. If it does bring comfort to any of the relatives having their loved one recognized by name then it's ok. The propaganda value is really a dead horse. I thought they were pulling NightLine.

Still not having anything relevant to say, Nightline recycles its bad ideas. The left still does understand why the American people aren't marching in lockstep with its tired old 60's rhetoric.

Somehow I don't think the real goal is honor.

I have no problem with showing respect for and acknowledging the sacrifices of our military members who have given their lives for their country.

I'm just skeptical that Nightline will present this with the proper respect for those brave people and what they fought for.

Yea I thought it was going off the air. I guess it should be up to the relatives of the service men/women. I don't think Nightline asked permission at all. They are too interested in sensationalism and to get people to dislike the "BUSH WAR".

Nothing wrong in doing this, however why not ALL the service men and women whom have died while in the service of their country, including the many who have been killed in non battle area accidents?

Are they any less important?

Will he be reading the names of all of the contractors that have died in action as well...in support of the US government? If Winkel-Kop isn't willing to do that...then its even more of a joke.

It's unpatriotic to mention the dead. Time to cancel Memorial Day.

I disregarded Koppel long before he "interviewed" two VC who, oddly enough, remembered, in detail, the lies promoted by John Kerry, all the while their communist minder watched withinn earshot. Koppel is a bad joke on the American public.

"I just don't trust Nightlines' motives."

Nor do any of us here.

We realize why and for what purpose these slime eaters do this.

We don't see any wailing and gnashing of teeth by these "enemies of America" over the many U.S. citizens murdered each week by criminals right here in the United States.

I know it would take a lot longer, but wouldn't it make more sense if he read the names of all the Al Qaeda killed during the same time period? After all, those are the soldiers of his friends!

Of course it is done to advocate Nightline's agenda. Nevertheless, I would like to voice a dissenting opinion.

One of the more gripping books I ever read was Eugene Sledge's "With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa." Despite having read a lot of war history, the book most eloquently expressed the horrors that many servicemembers are faced with in war.

I supported and still support the effort in Iraq, but as a civilian I think it is healthy to be reminded of the cost of our freedom and prosperity.

I thank all of you who have given military service to our nation.

I do wonder how the families feel about this...we all rightly distrust the "ratings mavens" and politicos who run Nightline and much of the MSM, but OTOH, it seems fitting to recognize the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice, and particularly on Memorial Day...

I might think this is not so different than reading all the names each year at memorial services for the anniversaries of OK City or 9/11...except it's a "judgement call" when it's the armed forces, whether they are sincerely honoring the fallen soldiers or trying to make a point either way about the "legitimacy" of their mission.

Hard to say, but I can imagine some soldiers' families watching and videotaping this as a "special remembrance" of their loved one, despite it's Ted Koppel and Nightline...and the DU'ers and their compatriots can do whatever they want to about it, as they are soul-less and bitter people who haven't had much success promoting their agenda and world-view lately. JMHO!

Of course they could honor our fallen servicemen by reporting the unbiased truth about the all the good work our men and women are doing overseas to secure and promote democracy and freedom.

Don't watch the program. After he has read the servicemen's names, he needs to read the 911 list of victims for reminder of why our soldiers are in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Too bad ABC's is too busy with their anti-war propaganda or they would also read our citizen's names who were killed in 9/11 to remind our countrymen why it is so important to fight this war. Thanks to Ted, he only serves as a reminder that we're not only fighting a war on terror abroad, but one in the press!

disaster caused by the leftwing democRATs?

What is this nitwit's email address? Koppel need to get his head
