"Virginia Governor Mark Warner may bring back the South, and Hillary Clinton - she's the only one who can bring back the White House furniture."
NE - Democrat Bill Richardson jabs one of his own, too OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, before diving into his keynote speech Saturday night at a Nebraska Democratic Party dinner, warmed up the partisan crowd with some political humor.
Richardson first told a story about Teddy Roosevelt, a Democrat, a man from Maine and a horse thief. An old joke, it was, with Republicans as the butt.
The Democrats at the downtown Hilton Hotel chuckled.
Then he took a playful shot at Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel.
"We've both been mentioned as a potential candidate for president," Richardson said, "but he is very sensitive to criticism of being too ambitious."
"In fact, he refuted those charges in interviews with The Washington Post, New York Times, and when he was on 'Meet the Press.'
Richardson continued: "He also refuted the charges on 'Face the Nation ... on 'This Week' ... and when he was on 'Fox News Sunday.'"
The long list of Hagel interviews and TV talk shows draw a bigger laugh.
But then, to be fair, he playfully cuffed fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton, also oft mentioned as a presidential candidate.
Richardson alluded to the day the Clintons left the White House with, some reports say, more than they came with:
"On the Democratic side, there is an impressive field of potential presidential candidates," Richardson began.
"There's Joe Biden (of Connecticut), who may be able to bring back national security voters; Senator Evan Bayh from Indiana may be able to bring back the Midwest.
"Virginia Governor Mark Warner may bring back the South, and Hillary Clinton - she's the only one who can bring back the White House furniture."
The Democrats laughed loudest then, if not long.
I think Bill Richardson is going to be the dems best hope for 2008, NOT Hillary CLinton...but, he was the one who was in charge during the fiasco at Los ALamos lab and the stolen tapes, wasn't he?
Hmmmm.... Christopher Dodd (D-CT), and Joe Liebermann (D-CT), don't recall Joe Biden from there too. Can a state have three senators?
LOL
AP Cub Reporters running the newsroom again.
FYI Giv Richardson Got a very nice write up in the National Rifleman Magazine a month or two ago. He signed a piece of pro gun legislation.
Fat Billy making fun of anybody is rich!
This clown has less credibility than a screen door on a submarine.
How the "Los Alamos Loser" ever got elected governor of NM is mind boggling!
I hope and pray this genius is the 2008 candidate.
"has less credibility than a screen door on a submarine"
LOL! Great line. Allow me to steal it?
no problemo...
I got a million of 'em. LOL
Cheney/DeLay 2008
Bill Richardson is the closest thing to a moderate who's still wearing the Scarlet 'D' - he even signed a bill easing restrictions on concealed carry in New Mexico, and did it at the NRA's Whittington Center!
Bill Richardson would be a very strong candidate in 2008 General Election. Problem is he's way too far right for today's Democrat primary electorate. Governor Bill has cut state income tax top rates (from 8.8% to eventually 4.9%), has kept the budget balanced right thru the recession, supported the war in Iraq, has signed both the original concealed carry reform law AND a set of amendments this year that got rid of some of the worst compromises needed to get it thru the first time.
He is truly a conservative "pro business" Democrat, and a very smart guy. Not unlike Mark Warner ... though Warner hasn't been a tax cutter, and perhaps most importantly Warner can't carry Virginia while Governor Bill would certainly swing NM back to the Dems.
If they wanted to win the Dems would nominate Bill Richardson, but they won't.
=Santa Fe, NM
You're right, while Richardson might win a general election, he'll never get that far. He would only win primaries in open primary states, similar to McCain.
