Dean defends imitation of Rush
Washington Times ^ | May 23, 2005 | James G. Lakely

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean yesterday defended his public mocking of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh's battle against addiction to painkillers, saying, "It is galling to be lectured to about moral values by folks who have their own problems.

"Hypocrisy is a value that I think has been embraced by the Republican Party," Mr. Dean told NBC's "Meet the Press" yesterday. "We get lectured by people all day long about moral values by people who have their own moral shortcomings."

Mr. Dean last month did an impression of Mr. Limbaugh for a gathering of Democrats in Minnesota that included the sound of someone snorting cocaine. Mr. Limbaugh became addicted to the painkiller OxyContin while dealing with years of chronic back pain, but entered a rehabilitation center last year and says he is now drug-free.

Mr. Dean, a doctor, was unapologetic about his parody, even when "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert asked whether it is "appropriate for a physician to mock somebody who has gone into therapy and the abuse for drug addiction?"

This is the great new hope of the Democratic Party?

I sure hope so! It will insure their minority status for a generation!

He must have gotten Rush mixed up with Al Franken.

IMO the number one cause of the Downfall of Western Civilization is people expecting that those who tell them right from wrong be perfect.

There has only been one perfect person. Everyone, EVERYONE, even those who strive to follow his teachings, comes up short. Those who use this to detract from their teachers do so intentionally and with full knowledge.

The second cause is the use of "Judge not lest ye be judged" by these very same people.

These are the very essence of the attack on Christianity and has led many, many Christians to sway in their faith, including myself for a time.

My favorite tactic is to point out that publicly calling someone a hypocrite is undoubtedly a judgment that should be made by God alone, since it is the most damaging thing you can say about someone who's trying to teach His way, thus putting the person in conflict with their second favorite argument.

I agree. Rush has made a career out of doing this. The crucial point though is that Rush is an entertainer while Howard Dean is the head of the 2nd most important political party in the world. Dean should have to meet a higher standard

What in the world is Dean doing attacking an entertainer anyway? Shouldn't he be more concerned about Republican politicians? If he does succeed in scoring a point with Rush Limbaugh, how does that show the American People that his Party is fit to govern?

That's the real problem with the current 'Rats; no sober citizen would trust them to govern. They stand for nothing except being anti-Republican, anti-Right, anti-Conservative, etc.

(I can't wait for Rush's show today)!

Rush isn't going to waste his time on Dean. He rarely responds to personal attacks because he knows they're just trying to force him to say something he may regret.

He did the say thing to Al Franken's book about him. Completely ignored him.

Dean might get used as comic relief to the judicial battle and News Weak's trashing of America's flag.

"Rush Limbaugh has made a career of belittling other people...making jokes about [them]," Mr. Dean said. "I don't think he's in any position to do that."

> One point to dean.

I didn't watch the interview, but edited for print, Dean's comments on Limbaugh's hypocrisy were right on target.

You two need to get with the program. You haven't the first clue of what's going on. The tables have been turned - their own "rules" are merely being implemented --- but this time --- against them.

"..Sadly, not enough Republicans and conservatives learned Alinsky's rules until late in the game."

"...As Alinsky states in "Rules for Radicals" it was foolish to believe that means are just as important as the ends.

He states that "to believe in the immaculate conception of ends and principles ... the practical revolutionary will understand ... [that] in action, one does not always enjoy the luxury of a decision that is consistent both with one's individual conscience and the good of mankind."

Sadly, not enough Republicans and conservatives learned Alinsky's rules until late in the game.

A sign of hope is the fact that the new media, including talk radio and the Internet, are changing all that. One can hope it is not too late.

In any event, Alinsky's rules include:

"Wherever possible go outside the experience of the enemy. Here you want to cause confusion, fear and retreat."

"Make the enemy live up to his/her own book of rules. You can kill them with this. They can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity."

"Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also, it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage."

"The threat is generally more terrifying than the thing itself."

"In a fight almost anything goes. It almost reaches the point where you stop to apologize if a chance blow lands above the belt."

"Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it and polarize it." ....

"One of the criteria for picking the target is the target's vulnerability ... the other important point in the choosing of a target is that it must be a personification, not something general and abstract." ...

"The enemy properly goaded and guided in his reaction will be your major strength." .... These red-herring tactics work. [snip]

*

Saul Alinsky, in his book Rules for Radicals teaches the organizer that he must give a moral appearance: “All effective action requires the passport of morality.”

The tenth rule of the ethics of means and ends states “that you do what you can with what you have and clothe it with moral arguments ... Moral rationalization is indispensable at all times of action whether to justify the selection or the use of ends or means.”

Rules for Radicals provides the organizer with a tactical style for community organization that assumes an adversarial relationship between groups of people in which one either dominates or is dominated. ...." Excerpted from:

And Saul Alinsky followed his own rules, too:

Howard Dean is a medical doctor. That is all he and I have in common.

Dean's bizarre behavior in "imitating" Mr. Limbaugh's (non-existent) cocaine addiction, even if it were true, violates medical ethics in the extreme. He is a massive embarassment to the medical profession, as well as demonstrating an absence of basic human decency. Thank goodness that the other MD in national political life, Dr. Bill Frist, shows an unceasing high degree of class, morality and ethical behavior.

Don't worry about Rush, folks.

Last week, he mocked Dean for his paltry fundraising abilities. For every dollar that the dems pulled in under Dean's leadership, the Republicans pulled in three more.

Rush and the Republicans are having the last laugh. They are laughing all the way to the bank.

More importantly, Dean is doing as a good a job of destroying the Dems than Rush and the Republicans are.
