Crowd cheers as cop is beaten
Gary Post-Tribune ^ | May 20, 2005 | Lori Caldwell

As a group of residents cheered, a Glen Park man tackled Gary Patrolman Carl Cochran, choking the officer and threatening to kill him in an unprovoked attack Wednesday night, Lt. Roger Smith said.

Cochran, a five-year veteran and member of the department’s elite S.W.A.T. team, suffered cuts to his face and injuries to his arm and back as a result of the protracted struggle with Kelvin D. Banks, 40.

Cmdr. Jerome Krebes said Thursday he ordered additional patrols in the area in response to the incident.

A small group of people — ten or less — surrounded the officer during the struggle as Banks wrestled with the officer and tried to grab Cochran’s gun.

“Cochran grabbed his wrist to stop him while Banks kept one hand on his throat and Banks said, 'I could kill you right now if I wanted to!’ . . . Cochran reported he could not reach his portable radio,” the police report states.

Banks was charged Thursday in Lake Superior Court in Crown Point with battery, resisting law enforcement, intimidation and disorderly conduct and faces up to three years in prison if convicted of the charges, Diane Poulton, spokeswoman for Prosecutor Bernard Carter, said.

Patrolman Richard Knight arrived at 5000 Washington St. to assist Cochran at a domestic dispute and saw his partner struggling with Banks.

Both men were on the ground and a group of residents were crowded around urging Banks to keep up the attack, Smith said. Eventually, Knight and Cochran subdued Banks, who continued to defy officers after he was handcuffed and being led to the squad car, police said

I agree. I grew up with a guy who is now a cop and two of my friends from high school are now cops. More decent men you will never meet.

One of them actually decided to become a cop after I joined the military. He took the test and told me that if he didn't get on with the police, he would join the military and be an MP so he could be a cop when he got out.

Luckily he was made it his first try and he loves the work. He hates derelicts though. Occupational hazard I guess. I hate derelicts too so I never hold that against him.

I always tell him now I want his job and he says I can't have the job, but he'll trade me salaries.

Wall it off and lock the gate. Throw food over the wall occasionally.

Check out the photos...

http://www.idler.co.uk/html/frontsection/craptown/towns/gary.htm

Town/Village: Gary, Indiana The only reason you go to Gary is if you're a crime writer, a drug dealer, or suicidal. Even then, you don't stop for long.

At first, from miles away, when you pick up Gary, Indiana on the horizon, it looks like the gathering of a biblical storm. The town is permenantly enveloped in a threatening rusty metallic smog.

The sun is completely blocked out. The only light comes from factory gas jet fires. The air tastes of battery acid. Feeding the smog, there are thousands upon thousands of steel factories, churning out vast quantities of toxic pollution (but these days no steel) that makes Doncaster look like Tunbridge Wells circa 1423.

Amazingly people live in Gary, or rather they die there. Crime is the number one pursuit in a city where unemployment is a way of life. Gary tops the US charts for gun death, stabbings, rape, armed robbery and school shootings. Crack cocaine is the drug of choice, but Gary is the centre for distribution of most other drugs to the Midwest. This profile says it all: www.whitehousedrugpolicy/gary

The local press is full of "Chicken Man's Dungeon uncovered", "Bible teacher gets death," or "Kids watch as classmates slain." State executions are de rigour. Those on death row can cheer themselves with the quaint fact that the electric chair at the Indiana State Prison is believed to have been constructed from the old hangman's scaffold, with the back and legs of the chair formed from braces and uprights. It has now been updated for lethal injections.

On the plus side, Gary has some of the cheapest housing in the US. And on top of all that, it's the hometown of Michael Jackson.

El Turk

I do like the prices on the houses for sale...

And if you let felons vote, you will get many juries that will be unwilling convict their "peers" of anything.

I think the Navy is looking for a new bombing range to practice on. Gary sounds like a perfect choice. Bystanders will be welcomed on the range during bombing runs.

Couldn't help but laugh about the "wife unit" line. My wife always asked "Theirs, I hope"? Funniest shirt was the one I brought home after getting between two drag queens on crank. Smelled like a perfume factory, and had more makeup on my shirt (dk blue) than she had on her vanity. Shirt was cut (nail file?) and I didn't know it 'cause of my vest.

"The bystanders should be charged with inciting to riot."

How about complicity to the battery?

The bystanders should be mowed down with heavy machine gun fire once the cop was retrieved.

I have a lot of respect for police officers today and know they literally put their lives on the line everyday. It is hell going to work and not knowing if you will come home at end of shift.

There are places here in Panama City, Panama that the police won't go into unless they are in platoon strength and have M-16s.
