The story hasnt worked since 1724, when we discovered that women have an egg cell. The virgin birth works for me in 2005 - it's a basic of the faith.

This guy should (or maybe already has) throw away his bible. He doesn't need it. He's already discarded everything from it that would contradict his secular philosophy. He's basically a pagan. This is the sort of tripe I fully expect to hear from a zonked out hippie chick that I talk to at Jazzfest. The mainline protestant churches are in serious trouble with this sort of philosophy leading them.

I really live in an awareness of a transcendent power that I cannot articulate, cannot explainThen he needs to find another line of work.
Why is it Lefties try and make up for their lack of intellectual gravitas by an overabundance of words which they think make their arguments more serious?
When I go to the red states Im considered a radical Christian, and when I go to the blue states Im considered an old-fashioned religious man who is trying to call people back to something
Spong is a heretic, not a "radical". All his feel-good, blowsy rhetoric can't obfuscurate that fact. This has nothing to do with "red" or "blue" states. The Bible is the same in all of them!

Why would anyone go to church if the leader of it has this dudes philosophy? You may as well stay home and watch Barney.

So I think that anything that begins to give people a sense of their own worth and dignity is God. I experience God as a life force that flows through the universe.Someone needs to explain Christianity to this guy.

"When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense; therefore, take every word at its primary, ordinary, usual, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate context, studies in the light of related passages and axiomatic and fundamental truths, indicate clearly otherwise." Spong's solipsistic eisegesis ranks right up there with the Jesus Seminar's. He and they don't want the Word to judge them; they want to sit in judgment on the Word.

Because there Ignorant of scripture and never read it for themselves....but how on earth would you be fooled into beileving that Jesus is a big Hoax...
To: The Ghost of FReepers Past
I pray that his eyes are opened and that he can see the truth; else, he will experience G-d as a Judge, and he will be amazed at the judgments.

I wonder how they can even be called THE LIBERAL christian movement.....Since they dont beileve in Jesus at all Hence... CHRISTianity...
To: Recovering_Democrat
All he is trying to do is to put God in a box. If you can put Him in a box you can control control what He does. At age 77 you'd think Sprong would be more concerned with worshipping God ...than controlling God.

I could not even get through a third of this article before I was dying to post a remark.
The Jews in and around Jerusalem and what we consider to be Israel were very radicalized for years way before the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE. They were radicalized for generations before the Romans came into control.
Not a word of the situation which led to the Maccabean revolution.
The best verse he says is a quote which was never spoken by Jesus? I doubt that this reprobate has ever read a Bible or a history book concerning the era.
Pseudo historian. What a crock. The writer knows so little that upon reflection, it is not even worth commenting on his work.
I cannot explain why then I do comment. Call it a character flaw. I am sorry.

He is becoming stupider instead of wiser. A man who has made a shipwreck of his faith. Aptly described in Romans 1 and 2 Peter 2.
