C-span

Posted on 05/16/2005 9:54:06 AM PDT by ken5050

OK, folks..let's se what going to happen today as we move closer to the showdown in the Senate. Live, at 1 PM EST on C-span 2, "Searchlight" Reid is holding a presser to discuss judicial nomination. The Senate then convenes at 2PM, and as Majority Leader, Frist will make the opening statement. Then Reid will speak. Frist as pissed at Reid last week..for announcing a possible compromise on the Senate floor without FIRST telling him of it..and Frist has yet to speak about Reid's comments about FBI files. Should be fireworks..

Unless he gets tapped for another VP run, Holy Joe will stay in the Senate forever, bet on it.

Who would the GOP run in that race? I hope he/she is to the right of Lieberman. :-)

That I will bet you on..look..he's virtually been run out of his own caucus..booed off the stage..they gave more credence to Sharpton and Kucinich than him..he doesn't want to be in the minority for another term..and growing left/lib/black anti-semitism in the Dem party has to frost him..and he is NOT a wealthy name..he could make some serious money in the private sector..

In a rabid sort of way, he does speak better than the horrid one. Harry is the ultimate pathetic whiner.

Thanks for the ping, Howlin! I'll try to catch up this afternoon...We are having a teenager/driving/tickets/family problem right now, so I've been having trouble getting my thoughts together to post. Teenage grandsons are something else!!!

I din't see Mort Zuckerman with McLaughlin. Was it John's One on one program? Because I did see the McLaughlin Group and Mort wasn't on that.
I need to find out more about Specter's health.

I'll read this thread this afternoon if there is a little peace in this house for a while.

Zell Miller is DEFINITELY the Tasmanian Devil.

Ted Kennedy is George the Dog
Joe Biden is Foghorn Leghorn.
Barbara Boxer is Henrietta the Hen.

My husband learned from his mistake. He's only voted the Republican ticket ever since.

Ken, don't give Leiberman so much credit. How do McCain, Chafee, Hagel, et.al. stay in the GOP, even when they were in the minority? If he can win (and believe me, he is a landslide), he will run until he drops.

If he is serioius about reverting to his pre-AlGore stances (you can never be sure), you don't want to replace him with an ultra-liberal like CT AG Blumenthal who will bide his time as our next governor--ugh.

"I say, I say, Henrietta, let go of my leg there."

"yay-us!"

Sheets could also be Foghorn. He does have the accent. And I can see Biden as Daffy, but I love Daffy too much to do that.

"And if the Dems get the majority, we can't filibuster their people either."

Friend, we have liberal judges on the federal courts today because they got 50+ votes in a democratic-controlled senate. That is the point. Judicial nominees have never been filibustered and should not be...regardless of which party controls the senate.

I think Bolton comes up tomorrow.

Bolton isn't even on the Executive Calendar yet.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/executive_calendar/xcalv.pdf <--

I'm not sure how to parse paragraph 1 of Rule XXXI (it seems to pertain both to committee and the full Senate, but I'm not sure), but one interpretation is that a nominee will not be voted on the same day the nomination appears on the calendar, unless there is unanimous consent that "the question be put."

Riddick's Senate Procedure also indicates a need for unanimous consent to take the vote, even if the vote is to take place on a day other than the day the nominee is reported by a committee.

http://www.gpoaccess.gov/riddick/browse.html <-- Riddick's Senate Procedure
http://www.gpo.gov/congress/senate/riddick/938-953.pdf <-- Nominations (see p952)
http://www.gpo.gov/congress/senate/riddick/1038-1078.pdf <-- Quorum call (see pp1071-74)

RULE XXXI
EXECUTIVE SESSION - PROCEEDINGS ON NOMINATIONS

1. When nominations shall be made by the President of the United States to the Senate, they shall, unless otherwise ordered, be referred to appropriate committees; and the final question on every nomination shall be, "Will the Senate advise and consent to this nomination?" which question shall not be put on the same day on which the nomination is received, nor on the day on which it may be reported by a committee, unless by unanimous consent.
