They wanted it to be true, at any rate.

The magazine said that because of reports of other abuses of prisoners by guards at Guantánamo, the possibility that a Koran was flushed down the toilet did not seem that far-fetched.

You know, I saw the title of this thread, then saw it was a NYT article, and wondered to myself how long it would take for the 'but' to appear. I made it through one whole sentence.
