NRA and Sportsmen Victorious in Florida: Anti-hunting Extremists Lose Funding

Monday, May 09, 2005

Fairfax, VA -- On the last day of the legislative session, the Florida Legislature overwhelmingly passed House Bill 1697, an omnibus highway safety package containing a provision to change how the Animal Friends license plate proceeds are distributed and used. This important pro-sportsmen measure was backed by the National Rifle Association (NRA), as well as the Unified Sportsmen of Florida and the Allied Sportsmen`s Associations of Florida.

In 2004, the Florida Legislature created the Animal Friends license plate. The fees from the plate were to be used for spaying, neutering and animal welfare programs in Florida. However, the funds were distributed to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), a group who not only doesn’t have a spay and neuter program, but is vehemently opposed to hunting and sportsmen’s rights.

"Giving license tag funds to an organization that doesn`t even have a spay and neuter program is bad enough, but giving the money to one of the most anti-hunting, anti-sportsmen groups in the country is clearly a mistake," said Marion P. Hammer, NRA past president and Executive Director of the Unified Sportsmen of Florida.

Early this year, members of the Florida Legislators` Sportsmen`s Caucus, acting on the requests of the NRA, the Unified Sportsmen of Florida and the Allied Sportsmen`s Associations of Florida, placed amendments in several highway safety bills which limited the use of funds to spay and neutering programs only and removed the HSUS as the recipient of the funds.

"We are delighted to have those funds pulled from HSUS and designated exclusively for Florida spay and neuter programs as originally intended," Ms. Hammer added. "I want to extend my thanks to all of the legislators who supported this provision, as well as the Allied Sportsmen`s Associations of Florida and its executive director, Lane Stephens, for their strong voice and support on behalf of sportsmen."

This legislation is yet another pro-gun victory in Florida this year. Two weeks ago, Governor Jeb Bush signed Florida’s "Castle Doctrine" into law, allowing law-abiding citizens to legally defend themselves from criminal attack.

The National Rifle Association is the nation’s leader in protecting the right to hunt for all law-abiding Americans. Along with approximately 17 million American hunters and many national conservation organizations, NRA is working to preserve the American hunting tradition for future generations. Hunters and sportsmen play a pivotal role in America’s economy and society, and have been leaders in promoting wildlife management and conservation.

I am a teacher and often have fathers take their kids out of school for a few days during the hunting season. Good for them. I fully support fathers spending time with their kids and passing on a worthwhile family tradition.

I'm all for supporting the local Humane Societies that actually run the pet shelters and adoptions. The HSUS however can lick me. They use a similar name to deceive people into supporting their anti-hunting/anti-gun agenda.

I would like to learn more about this. Give me some more information. I only know about the local humane society.

Anti-hunting activists in Florida?

Save the Alligators! We need more attacks on golf courses and at nursery schools!

Save the Feral pig! We want more destruction of native foliage!

Save the White-tail deer! We want more lyme disease!

They say it right on their web site and try to make it look like they 'help' the local societies in some way.

http://www.hsus.org/pets/animal_shelters/what_the_hsus_does_for_shelters/

At The Humane Society of the United States, we receive numerous inquiries about our role with local shelters. The HSUS is not a parent organization for local humane societies, animal shelters, or animal care and control agencies. Each is an independent organization, governed by its own bylaws and board of directors (in the case of humane societies), or local ordinances and officials (in the case of animal care and control agencies). Funding for local humane societies largely comes from donations and bequests. Animal care and control programs are generally funded by the local government.

While The HSUS does not operate or have direct control over any animal shelter, we do work on the national level to abolish large-scale abuses of animals, employing educational, investigative, and legislative means to eliminate cruelty and promote animal welfare.

Now if Florida legislators would just get FPIRG off the college campus billing sheets and stop students from unwittingly funding leftist activists...

That or put an "FTA" (FlaTaxpayersAssn) and "FCI" (FlaCatoInstitute) on there to fix that.

Marion Hammer certainly hammered HSUS this time. Such a performance deserves a magnum of champaign, IMHO.

Thanks! I think that preserving our shooting & hunting heritage is just as important for moms to share with their children as it is for fathers.

Like I said, you must be a great mom. I think that it is important for dads to share in roles that sometimes are seen as traditionally female ones too while raising kids (ESPECIALLY spending time with kids and helping them with their schoolwork).
