UPS pilots authorize strike

CHICAGO (Reuters) - United Parcel Service Inc.'s (NYSE:UPS - News) pilots voted to authorize their union to call a strike, the Independent Pilots Association said on Thursday.

The union said more than 99 percent of its members voted to authorize its five-pilot executive board to call a strike. Of the 2,462 eligible crew members, 2,371 pilots participated in the vote and 2,356 voted for the authority. Fifteen voted against.

The union said it is in its third year of talks for a new contract.

UPS on strike again? Jeez its time for a company wide firing. To me its simple, once you become a cornerstone of our national economy, there should only be "at-will" employment.

Every time these fools do this, they lose 5% market share to FEDEX, who by the way, does NOT wimp out on their overnight guarantee. Go ahead, strike, you jerks. Compared to FEDEX, you suck.

I hope that DHL takes this opportunity to shake up the non-postal package delivery business to heart. I worked at a quick-copy shop that offered package delivery during the last UPS strike. People were NOT happy when they learned their only other option was FedEx, which was much more expensive at the time.

I just find it interesting that from their height of strength in the 60's, membership in trade unions has fallen from about 30% of the workforce to about 7%.

Besides, what business do certain groups of professionals have organizing anyhow? They want to be treated like professionals, but they act like spoiled rotten children.

I doubt UPS is going to have any trouble finding some non-union replacement pilots.

I did know that but I really don't care.
I've been using them exclusively for the past 3 months and they have been extremely efficient. They deliver and pick up when they say they will. Outstanding customer service too!

Actually, DHL, Deutsche Post and DANZAS are just one big happy company now - all under the control of the German Government.

Promise them anything they want, and in the years to come the pilots will see, just as the airline industry sees, that you don't get something for nothing. If they want pie-in-the-sky-thinking, let's accommodate because it means nothing in outlying years.

Outside of management, the Teamsters (the truck drivers) and the pilots most of UPS's employees are temps. Spherion fills most of the lower level jobs with employees for UPS.

You should care. DHL, Deutsche Post & DANZAS are all ONE company now - under the control of the German Government.

By patronizing them, you are, in effect, allowing a State Run monopoly to gain market share in the US.

Of course, the US should NEVER have allowed them to operate here in the first place.

My company's used FedEx for the last five years, and I have no real complaints. As a matter of fact, they've been quite reliable. Screw UPS.

Bush and crew have been quitely placing the applicator tip of a fleet enima into the AFL-CIO's rectum. The AFL-CIO has been trying to counteract this by finding other slackjaw worker dues such as in the South and have been unsuccessful. This is all in the plan.

Well I don't care.
They offer a better service for the price and as an American Consumer and Businessman I refuse to pay for crappy service. UPS and FedEx will get my business when they earn it back...or when DHL proves to no longer be effective.
Its the same reason I don't buy American made cars anymore...I can't justify paying more for less. Plus DHL employs plenty of Americans...

Sounds like UPS management needs to take a page out of the Ronald Reagan play book.

It shouldn't be to hard to replace 2,000 or so highly paid pilots.

With all the airlines going out of business there are plenty looking for work.
