Pat jumps the shark on this line. Hitler invaded France long before we entered WWII. And Hitler declared war on us before we declared war on him.
Which means Pat is just talking out his arse. It's a darn shame to see someone waste his considerable writing skills in such a manner.
The statement he makes about drawing Hitler into Western Europe was in reference to the involvement of Great Britain and France in the war, not the U.S.
I suspect that most replies on this thread are being posted by people who didn't read the full article first. Buchanan actually agrees with the basic premise of Bush's speech in Russia earlier this week -- and then proceeds to ask a lot of direct, hard-hitting questions about what the hell World War II was all about. The manner in which the FDR administration signed over Eastern Europe to the Soviets -- after most of the media in this country spent years engaging in a deliberate cover-up of Stalin's atrocities -- was an absolute travesty.

No you are showing your lack of reading comprehension.England and France told Hitler they would not allow him to invade Poland. This was an indefensible position because they could not enforce it.By going to war over Poland it gave Hitler an excuse to invade Western Europe. This is a legitimate anaysis of the hisory. Some on Free Republic have become to quick to classify legitimate scholarship and analysis as "jumping the shark" based on their own lack of study.
Buchanan also ignores the fact that while Pearl Harbor lay in still-smoking ruins, Hitler took the initative in declaring war on the United States at the same time the Nazis were conducting the 'Wannsee Conference' which planned the extermination of all European Jews after the German invasion of all European nations.
The Japanese carriers were still steaming back East when Hitler's SS death squads were starting their program of genocide, yet Pat Buchanan says that we provoked Hitler.
Pat Buchanan can't die soon enough for me.
If this were 1942, I'd call for charges of treason to be brought against him.

Actually he is referring to britain and france declaring war on germany, which they did when he invaded poland. You are thinking of the United States, which came 2 yrs later.
To be fair with Pat Buchanan, he does speak of the West, that is, the United States but also Great Britain and France. So he asks rhetorically that if England and France wanted to declare war on Hitler to keep him out of the Western "sphere", then it was a blunder.
Apart from that, I am extremely surprised anyone can ask whether fighting WW2 was worth it.
