Test of Hispanic boycott fails in Arizona

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

An immigrant advocacy group asked Hispanics to boycott businesses and to stay home from work yesterday to protest legislation by Arizona lawmakers targeting illegal aliens, and said it was a trial run for a full-scale, three-day economic protest planned for July. "This is a test so people can see and feel the power we have and the actual stranglehold we have on the economy of this state," Elias Bermudez, executive director of Centro de Ayuda, an immigrant advocacy group in Phoenix, told reporters this week. "We contribute to the greatness of this state and we should not be pushed around like we are." Although advertised extensively on Spanish-language radio and television stations, most community and civic leaders agreed that yesterday's boycott was a failure because many potential participants could not afford to lose a workday or business income. But the real effort will take place in July, organizers said, when Hispanics in Phoenix and Tucson will be asked again to boycott businesses and stores and to stay home from work.

"We contribute to this great state and we should not be pushed around like we are."

Who is being pushed around? Is this person a legal immigrant, or an illegal? If he is illegal then he needs to be pushed all the way across the border. How many times do we have to say it? This isn't about immigration, it's about illegal entry into the country.

Bring it ON, Mr Bermudez. Yeah, there'd be some dislocation for a while. But a free economy, one not dominated by corruption and the vestiges of Spanish aristocracy and early 20th century socialism, can adjust to the absence of cheap illegal labor.

And while we're adjusting, why don't you go back to your benighted part of the world and get a stranglehold on IT? Maybe you couldhelp make it an economy worth living with.

(Sheesh!)

This publicity for illegal aliens (and many legal immigrants) only reveals, among others, their sociopathic sense of entitlement and will only help to turn at least some of the complacent citizens against them.

Appalling, but predictable. We're in for a rough time over this.

Mr. Bermudez needs to understand that it's the flea who needs the dog, the dog doesn't need the flea.

Maybe it's time we start using a more accurate term for "illegal immigrants": CRIMINALS!

Feelings are running a bit hot, today...

The kids passed a protest group out in front of the Fiesta Mall in Mesa, AZ yesterday. The signs were in Spanish, and made no sense to them whatsoever. The daughter-in-law is only two generations removed from Mexico.

According to the Arizona Republic(Phoenix paper) it was a success.

Well, it was definitely declared a success by organizer Elias Bermudez, executive director of Centro de Ayuda (Center of Help).

Some roofing companies were crippled by the boycott. An office worker who answered the phone at Catalina Roofing and Supply in Phoenix said none of the company's 160 roofers showed up for work Tuesday. At San Tan Roofing and Superstition Carpentry in Gilbert, half of the company's 150 roofers and 400 of its 700 framers didn't show up for work, Chief Financial Officer William McGlothlin said. McGlothlin, for example, said he had no intention of firing workers who participated in the boycott. "In fact, we are hiring," he said.

Jorge Rivas, 26, who earns $110 a day as a roofer, was among the hundreds who stayed home. "We are trying to stop the anti-immigrant laws that they are introducing against us who don't have papers," said Rivas, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico.

1. These companies sound like they are well aware of their workers being illegal aliens.

2. I have trouble believing that no Americans would do roofing at $110 a day.

So, now we know not to do business with Catalina or San Tan Roofing, and we should make sure they are dropped from the bid lists of any patriotic contractors as well.

One hundred sixty illegals at a fine of $10,000 each would produce $1,600,000 that could be paid toward the debt that is incurred by these workers.

Well, my mechanic was working. The anchor (Martha Vazquez) on a local news channel was working, and she had to do this story. I don't know how she kept a straight face.

People who are here legitimately do not appreciate the undercutting of their wages.
