Grits will sell anything
PM must realize there isn't a divine right to rule
By Ezra Levant
Is there any rule, convention or taboo the Liberals won't break to keep their grip on power?
We already know they will steal money and break election laws. That's not an insulting opinion. That's the cool fact Michel Beliveau admitted under oath before the Gomery commission last week. Beliveau was the Liberal party president in Quebec, and he admitted he illegally funnelled $300,000 to the Liberals for their election campaign, taxpayers' money that was supposed to go to government programs.
But we already knew about things like this. It's called AdScam. Theft is a crime, but there are worse things.
Like selling judgeships to lawyers, in payment for them working free on Liberal campaigns. This was what Benoit Corbeil, the former executive-director of the Liberals in Quebec testified under oath. According to him, seven or eight lawyers who campaigned for the Liberals were rewarded with appointments as judges. Other Liberal donors, including here in Alberta, were also appointed to the bench.
Money is just money. But auctioning off the judiciary to political allies corrupts the institution of the courts and undermines the reputation of justice itself. By participating in judge-selling schemes, the judges prove from the outset that they do not have respect for the rule of law.
Selling the courts is horrendous, but most judicial matters are non-partisan -- contract disputes, divorces, traffic accidents. But how about selling off the legislative and executive branches of government -- selling government policy itself?
For all his flaws, Martin reduced the deficit and started modest tax reduction. But in a desperate effort to save his failing government, Martin sold out that patrimony, rewriting the federal budget and scrapping planned tax cuts in a secret discussion with the NDP and their union paymaster, Buzz Hargrove. Parliament, the Finance Ministry -- what are those?
Martin will auction any policy to save his skin. The latest news is Canada might be sending troops to Sudan, all to buy the vote of a lone MP, David Kilgour. We wouldn't send troops to Iraq in support of our greatest ally, but we'll send troops to Sudan -- in the absence of a UN resolution, no less -- to save the Liberals from a summer election about Adscam.
They're trying to sell ambassadorships, too, offering Conservative MP Inky Mark a post if he quits the Tories.
But it's not enough. Stealing money, selling judicial and diplomatic posts, changing the budget, dispatching troops -- it won't stave off a non-confidence vote scheduled for May 18 that the Liberals will surely lose, and an election on June 27 that they'll lose, too.
So what will they do? The Liberals announced they'll ignore that May 18 non-confidence vote and continue acting as if they're in power even if the majority of MPs vote against them.
Canadians only gave Martin a minority government. But he's going to act like a majority government, even when he loses a confidence vote.
This will force a constitutional crisis. This is when the Queen, through the Governor General, must teach the power-drunk Liberals that there is no divine right to rule -- that governments are limited by constitutions, and if they won't step aside when they lose a confidence vote, the Queen will kick them out.
Maybe the Liberals think they can sell out our constitutional traditions to preserve power.
Blogger Kate McMillan coined the phrase "the Libranos" to describe such thugs. And she's got a new word to name what they're turning our once-great country into: Bananada.

Well said!
I am more than a little shocked. Canadian troops in the Sudan unsupported? For what? So Martin can look like a tough guy after Iraq? What is their mission? Their objective? To make nice targets for the Janjaweed? This one really needs to be thought through, or somebody's going to get killed.
Please make this criminal agency fall!!!
But you don't understand. Canada is a liberal country that needs more socialists, PC policies. It's irrelevant how those policies get in place as long as the liberal agenda is advanced. the people of Canada aren't stupid. They know that what the Liberals are doing is for the ultimate good of the country and the conservatives will destroy their progressive achievements. Canadians will not stand for this. They don't care about what the party does to get it's goals accomplished. It's for the greater good. The liberals will win another minoirty government and continue to champion equality for all and make the oppressive capitalists pay for the harm they have inflicted upon minorities and the environment.
< /sarcasm>
Even though the above paragraph was written tongue in cheek, many of my Canadian friends and family firmly believe this. They actually think conservatives are the equivalent of the embondiment of evil, especially if you are Christian. Canada gets what she deserves.
Thank God I don't know any Canadians in my area in the West that think this way. This frame of mind that you have just described in a Central Canada (Ontario and Quebec) frame of mind. Ontario does have some good Conservatives but they are sadly far outnumbered. Martin is really showing his pathological nature. If only those with eyes could see!!
Hey, I didn't write the friggen article....I simply find it ironic that Canada is thinking of sending Canadian troops to the Sudan, but wouldn't support the United States in Iraq. I don't know how well equipped the Canadian military is but from what I read in this article, it sounds like things will get better. Next time....check your attitude at the door please. I'm nice this time, but I won't be nice next time.
