Sounds like applying for state government work in Ohio. White men need not apply.
I tried that in the late 70's- fresh out of college and was told I was of the wrong ethnicity and wrong gender. Went to Metzenbaum's office to complain and his secretary called me a liar. Walked out a devout conservative. So at least I have that going for me.
The notion that every profession should statistically mirror the "community" is absurd.
That is actually a severe prejudice.
And for where I am as well, The People's Republic of Seattle.
I would imagine that if they are willing to actually admit publicly to a 3 year wait based upon race, the actual reality is most likely 5-6 years. Many honorable people will have their careers ruined or severely damaged as a result of this, just as has happened here in the USA.
In Police and Fire services, this sort of thing not only occurs where new recruits are concerned, but at every step of the advancement ladder as well.
I am acquainted with police officers who simply gave up on taking the Sergeant's exam, because they spent seven or more years scoring among the very top candidates but were always passed over by an 'ethnic' candidate very, very far down the scoring list.
In public service positions such as those in the fire and police services, what this ends up causing is a severe, systemic disenchantment and plummeting morale, as well as a marked degradation of the quality of service rendered unto the public.
It makes organizations such as fire and police services far more expensive to run (bigger crews needed on fire calls, more backup needed for police) and also does a profound disservice to the taxpaying public. When you, as a hardworking, taxpaying citizen have some sort of trouble in your life and dial 911, you expect and deserve to have a dedicated police officer, who fills the doorway and carried a big shotgun come to your aid or a husky firefighter who can sling you over his broad shoulder and carry you to safety if the case warrants it.
What we get with this sort of 'affirmative action' garbage is a puny, inarticulate and comparatively 'slow' officer or firefighter who needs three assistants to do the job that he / she should have been able to do on his / her own.
People die because of this kind of garbage.
“People die because of this kind of garbage.”
Yes, and men lose the respect of their families because they can’t get a decent job.
“There is the potential that some white males will have waited up to three years to get in.”
and then when they do, they will be the scapegoats for everything.
Agreed. When I was applying as a firefighter to the City of Seattle, a Japanese friend of mine who had already gotten in (with lower test scores, and he's a puny guy...I'm a big, husky stoat and I was firefighter of the year in my volunteer department...I was no slouch) and he told me "don't even bother applying....they're not hiring white boys"
Nowadays, it doesn't happen "officially" anymore but there is still a LOT of anti-white and anti-male bias in hiring, promotion and everywhere else. It's sick and it is a profound disservice to the taxpayer, who rightfully expects The Best firefighter or police officer to come to their aid in a time of need.
And, as you say, it wreaks havoc in families when 'unofficial' and 'unspoken' but very real barriers to hiring and advancement crush a hardworking family's dreams when all they want to do is to play by the rules and work hard and have reasonable expectations based upon their hard work. It's awfully hard to tell the wife "well dear, I didn't make the Sergeant's exam again this time. I was the top score again but they hired a black lesbian who was thirty points down the scoring list from me".
Stuff like that destroys people's lives and it's wrong, wrong, wrong.
"sigh"
(sorry about my venting)
and then when they do, they will be the scapegoats for everything.
Yes. May God Help you if you're working as a law enforcement officer and you have to shoot a black criminal. It makes absolutely no difference whatsoever whether it was a justified shooting or not. This could be a serial police killer who has drawn on you and has his finger on the trigger. Makes no difference at all....your life will be a living hell for years and your career may not survive it.
Correction: I should have said "It doesn't happen "officially" in Washington State anymore (an anti-affirmative-action initiative was passed just a few years ago....but it wasn't passed in time to help me out when I was a viable fire service candidate) I can't speak to the hiring laws in other states. It may well still be going on "officially" elsewhere.
