Marple Newtown is a Pennsylvania school district in suburban Philadelphia, and this post is probably only of interest to Pennsylvanians, and maybe even just suburban ones.

The tax increases are pretty much the same throughout my county.

What are we getting out of it? The schools are arguably worse than they were five years ago much less 20 years ago.

School boards are basically powerless, fyi. State law makes it so that every contract dispute the union wins & mandates mean sending growth for which our legislature can duck blame. And it is our legislature that is truely at fault. If your upset about the tax hike let your school board know but don't pound them. Pound your senator & representative.

How long is America going to let public employee unions use the schools as a cash cow, all the while claiming it's "for the children"?

School Taxes Are Up 31 Percent Over 5 Years

Now if they had test scores up 31 percent they would be all set! Instead, the test scores are dropping even though they repeatedly dumb down the tests.

The SAT is a complete joke compared to what it used to be.

I'm voting with my feet. I'm leaving Delaware County for the Boyertown area. My total millage is going from 43.5 to 20.5, for a vastly better school district.

Money stolen from taxpayers for "public education" goes right into the coffers of the Democrats.

We are in Coatesville District and paying almost 3%. 0.298. We cannot recall school board members, nor can we vote on tax increases. There is no cap on the tax percentage as in other states. Theoretically, our tax rate could rise to 5, 10, 20 percent per year. Last year our school board proposed a 23% increase, but settled on a 10% increase, which is their usual bait and switch game so we wind up happy we just got the 10%.

Pardon me for being redundant, but my school (real-estate) taxes went up $300/month. In January.

What was your point?

Note I said that they WENT UP $300 A MONTH.

MFG, I need to sell this dump and move to Alabama.

It's more than unions:

Creating the Ultimate Magnet School

Plyler v. Doe: The Root of All Evil.

If there was ever a single event that has contributed to the explosion of illegal immigration in our country it was the 1982 Supreme court decision that made it mandatory for every state in the union to educate every single child of criminally illegal immigrants no matter the cost, conditions of their entry, justification or the resources necessary to accomplish this indignation by judicial fiat.

In September 1977 a class action suit was filed on behalf of school-aged children of illegal Mexican immigrants who were residing in Smith County, Texas. See Plyler v. Doe,457 U.S. 202, 206 (1982) The action complained of the “exclusion” of the plaintiff children from the public schools of the Tyler Independent School District. 457 U.S. at 206.[1] Here's the upshot: The reason that these children were "excluded" is because they were in this country illegally. It was a no-brainer. The supposedly sovereign State of Texas was no longer going to foot the bill for these ultimate “magnet" school; free public education for illegal aliens. So the Texas legislature, on behalf of the People of the state of Texas, passed a law saying just that. And the Supreme court reversed it.

continued...
