The other shoe dropped for Julie Lee on Thursday when the erstwhile fundraiser for former Secretary of State Kevin Shelley was charged by a federal grand jury in Sacramento with mail fraud and attempted witness tampering.
A seven-count indictment alleges that the 58-year-old Lee, a San Francisco businesswoman, one-time city commissioner and political power broker in the Asian community, siphoned $125,000 out of a state grant in 2001 and 2002, then used the money for campaign contributions through intermediaries to Shelley, who was a candidate for secretary of state.
The indictment also alleges Lee created false and misleading paperwork and lied to state auditors and investigators to hide her misuse of the grant money. She is further accused in the indictment of trying to persuade three witnesses not to communicate with federal agents investigating her and, if necessary, to lie to the agents.

Shelley, a San Francisco Democrat who resigned March 4, is not expected to be charged, according to sources familiar with the investigations.

Thursday's indictment details the state's award of a $500,000 grant in June 2000 to the San Francisco Neighbors Resource Center, a nonprofit organization headed by Lee, to assist in the development and construction of a community center.
The organization ostensibly wanted to open a facility "that would provide child care and care for seniors," the indictment says.
"Over the course of a little over a year," Lee routed $125,000 of the funds through intermediaries to Shelley as campaign contributions, the indictment says.
In August, knowing law enforcement was on her trail, Lee tried to persuade three witnesses to pass on false information to federal agents, the indictment charges.

Oh, she's a keeper, for sure.. lol
I have a feeling before Julie is done singing, Shmelley will be perp walking.
The Feds have their plates full as is, but because of Shmelley's various little scams he was running they won't just let him walk, imo.
A few weeks ago (when she was hit with state charges) Lee was trying to pass this whole thing off as "westerner gossip".
Classic.
