ABORTION STAND HALTS CLINTON'S SHIFT TO MIDDLE
By IAN BISHOP Post Correspondent

May 6, 2005 -- WASHINGTON — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is putting the brakes on her move to the political middle by opposing legislation that would bar helping underage girls cross state lines for an abortion without their parents' consent.

Clinton — despite preaching moderation in recent speeches — will toe the Democratic line in the Senate in an effort to block a GOP-backed bill that just passed the House and makes it illegal for anyone to help a girl get a secret out-of-state abortion.

"I don't believe that any young woman should have to make this decision alone. But, tragically, there are sometimes instances in which a young woman simply cannot involve her parents, including rape, violence or incest," Clinton told The Post.

"I oppose the House-passed bill, which glosses over these complicated situations, making criminals out of grandparents, clergy and other adults who try to act in good faith."

The bill punishes adults with up to one year in jail and a $100,000 fine for helping minors bypass restrictive laws in their home states for abortions elsewhere without their parents consent. It also imposes a 24-hour waiting period for out-of-state abortions, even with a parent's consent.

The House approved the measure last week with a 270 to 157 vote. Fifty-four Democrats crossed over in support. None of New York state's Democratic members of Congress voted for it.

As Clinton pursues a potential 2008 White House bid, her opposition could have long-term ramifications because the overwhelming majority of Americans support parental notification for underage abortions.

Like Clinton, Sen. Charles Schumer opposes the measure...

Poor Hillary...Can't make up her "mindless" mind. (Guess the poll numbers came in differently than the last poll.)

The sun always rises in the east. Hillary is a saint in NY because of her liberal stance and her vast intelligence (whatever).

A girl can't tell her parents that she was raped? Are we talking about Americans here, or Saudis?

Well, rewrite the law to reflect those exceptions. Do not hide behind them, Shillary.

Please keep up the fight. She has been getting a lot of support and will need good opposition if she has any chance of loosing her seat.

First of all, if they are minors, they are not young women, they are children. Secondly, all of these instances should be reported to the authorities as they are crimes. Finally, if they were reported immediately, and the victim was treated, there would be no need for an abortion.

EVERY law has exceptions. You don't think the courts are able to sift those out??

In a lot of cases, we're talking "statutory" rape. I'm sure Planned Parenthood pays Hillary big bucks for this attitude!

What in the world does Hillary mean when she says "They shouldn't have to make this decision alone?" So Planned Parenthood should be the helpful decision maker AND THE ABORTION PROVIDER?

What if the rapist was her father? It happens, unfortunately.

At least that was the reason an acquaintance gave me when I tried to comprehend this idea of kids having abortions without parental consent...

Good Lord why would a young woman NOT be able to tell her parents she was raped????? I think there is a serious problem if a young woman cannot tell her parents that. And the serious problem is NOT the rape. I don't get this statement at all!

Well, we're gonna have some fun next year. She's not doing well Upstate. Depending on who runs against her, she could lose a bid for re-election to the Senate. And if she did, she'd be damaged goods as far as running for prez is concerned. Plus, if she does decide to run for re-election, she'll be asked if she'd be willing to serve out her term. If she says no, she'll tip her hand and her ambition will not win her any points. If she hedges, it will look worse. And if she lies and says she'll serve out her term if re-elected then doesn't, well, then she'll be doubly screwed. Couldn 't happen to a more well deserving piece of work.

All I can say is...Run, Hillie, run...

Heh heh heh heh heh....

I'm betting clergy who push a child into abortion aren't acting in "good" faith. If there's rape, violence, or incest going on within the family, and grandparents, clergy, or other adults know about it, why are they sneaking little Suzy around anyway? Why aren't they taking action to stop it? Good golly, lefties are morons.

that's right. She may be a saint at the school where I'm working but not too many other places (except Syracuse area and other cities). Country folk don't want her.

It is quite apparent that she supports abortion on demand and is hiding behind "rape, incest etc." that all pro-death people hide behind. What Grandparent would take their child across state line to abort their grandchild? I think Hilary definitely inhaled.

Good Lord why would a young woman NOT be able to tell her parents she was raped?????

Because her father believed that it was her fault - no matter what the circumstances. My father would have never believed me, if I had been raped (thank goodness, nothing that bad ever happened to me).

Some parents just cannot help but blame their kids for everything that happens.

That being said, I whole heartedly support this bill, just do understand that not all parents are loving and supportive to their children.

Even if this good bill never becomes law, it's done a public service by unmasking Hitlary.
