not so long ago, I was against this kind of federal ID action - but now, the onslaught of illegal immigration has forced me to "evolve" my position

Wow, how to turn an excrutiating hour trip to renew your legit drivers license into a 4-month long process. I think I would rather drive an ice-pick into my eardrum repeatedly.

Anyone see the movie Code 46? Pretty dreary, starring communist America loather Tim Robbins, but looks just about what 2008 is turning out to be. Papelle please.

All they had to do was pass a law that required various information to be provided prior to a state issuing a drivers license. Instead they have constructed a national ID card along with the network to track such an ID card.

Many states will spend huge amounts of money changing their data processing systems to comply with this new national identity card. Much much more than the feds have said since they pulled the numbers out of thin air.

Another thing the law does is create a national driving history system. Much like the current law for commercial driver's licenses. Insurance companies should like that.

This is a stupid law tacked on to other stupid legislation without any public hearings.

There is some border security built into the law but it's mostly for high tech cameras and whatnot. My solution would be to take the next 30,000 people sneaking across the Mexican border, give them border patrol uniforms and pay half of them a good amount of money for each person they keep out. Then pay the other half a good amount for each illegal they find that's already here that we can send back to Mexico. IE: Hire the Mexicans to kick out the Mexicans.

Excuse me, is the anti-christ running the Republican party?

The law simply requires that ID be verified before issuing a driver's license, for crying out loud and mandates a uniform process for doing that across the nation. Good grief.

Wait a minute....don't we already have a national ID? I think it's called a PASSPORT. Granted American passports do not have a physical description of the barer, but that could be corrected and updated when each person renews their passports. Seems simple to me.

The part that gets me is how the federal government can take money from the citizens of a state. And then blackmail the state to conform to its whims or else they will not give back money they took...And no ones calls it blackmail. In reality this is how the federal government gets around states rights. We do need to check for illegals before issuing drivers licenses, but they should not be allowed to dictate what is on the drivers license that is given to a states citizen.

Well - at least one good thing is in this bill:
The Real ID Act also contains a provision that will allow the Homeland Security secretary to waive any law that would inhibit the building of fencing along US borders. The provision is aimed at completing construction of a 2.5-mile section of fencing along a smuggling route between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, that has been delayed for years by environmental concerns.

(C) Proof of the person's social security account number or verification that the person is not eligible for a social security account number.

(D) Documentation showing the person's name and address of principal residence.

(2) SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS-

(A) IN GENERAL- To meet the requirements of this section, a State shall comply with the minimum standards of this paragraph.

(B) EVIDENCE OF LAWFUL STATUS- A State shall require, before issuing a driver's license or identification card to a person, valid documentary evidence that the person--

(i) is a citizen of the United States;

(ii) is an alien lawfully admitted for permanent or temporary residence in the United States;

(ii) EXPIRATION DATE- A temporary driver's license or temporary identification card issued pursuant to this subparagraph shall be valid only during the period of time of the applicant's authorized stay in the United States or, if there is no definite end to the period of authorized stay, a period of one year.

(iv) RENEWAL- A temporary driver's license or temporary identification card issued pursuant to this subparagraph may be renewed only upon presentation of valid documentary evidence that the status by which the applicant qualified for the temporary driver's license or temporary identification card has been extended by the Secretary of Homeland Security.

(3) VERIFICATION OF DOCUMENTS- To meet the requirements of this section, a State shall implement the following procedures:

(A) Before issuing a driver's license or identification card to a person, the State shall verify, with the issuing agency, the issuance, validity, and completeness of each document required to be presented by the person under paragraph (1) or (2).

(B) The State shall not accept any foreign document, other than an official passport, to satisfy a requirement of paragraph (1) or (2).

(C) Not later than September 11, 2005, the State shall enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Secretary of Homeland Security to routinely utilize the automated system known as Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, as provided for by section 404 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (110 Stat. 3009-664), to verify the legal presence status of a person, other than a United States citizen, applying for a driver's license or identification card.

(d) Other Requirements- To meet the requirements of this section, a State shall adopt the following practices in the issuance of drivers' licenses and identification cards:

(1) Employ technology to capture digital images of identity source documents so that the images can be retained in electronic storage in a transferable format.

In the event that a social security account number is already registered to or associated with another person to which any State has issued a driver's license or identification card, the State shall resolve the discrepancy and take appropriate action.

(6) Refuse to issue a driver's license or identification card to a person holding a driver's license issued by another State without confirmation that the person is terminating or has terminated the driver's license.

(8) Subject all persons authorized to manufacture or produce drivers' licenses and identification cards to appropriate security clearance requirements.

(9) Establish fraudulent document recognition training programs for appropriate employees engaged in the issuance of drivers' licenses and identification cards.

(1) All data fields printed on drivers' licenses and identification cards issued by the State.

(2) Motor vehicle drivers' histories, including motor vehicle violations, suspensions, and points on licenses.

I may have missed it, but I see nothing in the legislation regarding deportation of illegals who attempt to obtain a drivers license.

Papieren bitte?

Actually, considering who'll most likely be asked for their papers when applying for a driver's license, it should be "Los papeles por favor".

Social change through managed crisis

Keep the borders wide open...and with the increase in crime
and terror...

You must protect the people by taking away their rights..

It's a beautifull plan..and most people will love the govt. or forgive them for 'having' to do it...

Some will even claim to have 'evolved' their belief system

Bwahahahaha
