JAMMU, India (Reuters) - Two teenage girls were killed and 17 people were wounded in Indian Kashmir when a bomb planted by Muslim separatists went off at a Hindu wedding, police said on Thursday. ADVERTISEMENT
Violence in the scenic Himalayan region has eased since a peace process between India and Pakistan started 18 months ago, but sporadic attacks on civilians and security forces continue.
Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir, and New Delhi accuses Islamabad of arming and training the separatists. Pakistan says it only provides moral support.
"This blast was caused by an improvised explosive device. It was planted by separatists at the marriage function," a police officer told Reuters.
The explosion took place late on Wednesday at a Hindu wedding feast in Lower Matta village, 145 km north of Jammu.
Fourteen of the wounded were taken by military helicopters to Jammu for treatment, Senior Superintendent of Police J.L. Sharma said.
Two of the three wars between India and Pakistan since they gained independence in 1947 have been over Kashmir. But the nuclear rivals have made tangible progress on a peace deal in recent months and a bus service linking Indian Kashmir with the Pakistani sector started last month.
More than 45,000 people have been killed since 1989 in the revolt in Kashmir.
