Wedding stress can take a toll - (excuses for Wilbanks' caper...oh, for pete's sake!)

'It's like being stuck in a river getting whisked over a waterfall'

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- On the surface, Jennifer Wilbanks was a happy bride-to-be who showed no sign to friends or family that she wanted to call off her extravagant wedding.

But underneath, as she would later tell police after running away to New Mexico, Wilbanks was scared and not sure she wanted to go through with her big day.

Marriage counselors say Wilbanks' actions are an extreme but understandable reaction to the stress of the wedding and the fear of disappointing others by backing out.

"Sometimes it's like being stuck in a river getting whisked over a waterfall," said Dr. Charles Raison, a psychiatrist and Emory University instructor who has counseled people about marital concerns. "The current is so strong, you can't fight it."

Shame about canceling a wedding at the last minute can lead to feelings of helplessness, counselors say.

"They've committed themselves out there in public, to their partner, their minister, their community, their friends while they've been perhaps nursing some ambivalence, mixed feelings and they feel isolated without being able to share it with anyone

As I was reading this apologia for this 32, going on 12 year old's behavior, I was "simulcasting" Hannity & Colmes, where Hannity was interviewing Wilbanks' pastor and her Mister Milque Toast fiancé. Both of them were denying that her "great escape" had a thing to do with "wedding jitters." They made the denial about 3 or 4 times, nodding energetically as they claimed that "Jennifer isn't crazy.......and her running away had nothing to do with fear concerning the wedding. It's something else entirely........"

Well, if that's so, then she picked a strategically odd time to bolt clear to Las Vegas, if it "had nothing to do with her wedding!"

The people who put this CNN article together must not have checked with Jenn's pastor and dolt of a boyfriend, before writing it, because it's clearly designed to explain away such a caper on the grounds that it's "really very normal" behavior! Nuts.

I keep hearing the media say how this was an extravagant wedding. Heck, 600-invite weddings with 14 bridesmaids is probably the AVERAGE of every wedding I've ever been to in my life. Of course, I am Italian-American, so we may tend to go overboard on these things. Still, I have yet to see one bride run away before the ceremony. :-)

Some folks in the office were discussing this today, and several of them shared the opinion that she should have stayed put, gone thru with it, "and then gotten an annulment or divorce later on".

I just can't put into words how that idea offends me. It cheapens marriage, and it broadens divorce.

If John Mason is stupid enough to marry this girl he deserves all the stress, lawyer's fees, (his and hers) Child Support Payments, Alimony Payments, Therapist Fees (his/hers/kids) he will get stuck with. She's going to get tired or confused and go racing into Family Court for a divorce and make a fool of this guy over again.

John Mason run away from this infantile girl. She is going to screw you over again and again because she can get away with it.

Stress is a 20 year old Marine battling it out in Fallujah.
The wedding stress excuse is now moot, as Mr We've Never Had Sex,We're Still Pure Although We Live Together Mason says Jennifer ran off for reasons unrelated to the wedding or the fact she doesn't have upper eyelids.

Planning and executing a wedding (or any other event) is only as stressful as you make it. My wife and I got married last October. We took a year and a half to plan the wedding/honeymoon because we didn't want the stress of trying to put it together and pay for it in less than 6 months. It ended up being a very classy, relaxed wedding/reception with family and close friends (~60 guests) that didn't have that "thrown together at the last minute" feel that so many weddings have. I've been to some real train-wreck weddings (usually young kids that had no reason getting hitched) because they tried to stuff 10 pounds of s**t in a 5 pound bag.

Hannity should've gave them both a Ruth's Chris certificate
, a kick in the groin and a certificate to see a shrink.

I dunno...this guy lives with her and can keep saying, "Yes, I'll marry you, honey!" but never have to go through with it. What a deal! Toothy Grin

When are we going to stop excusing bad behavior by people who know better?

Other than the time spent by the cops looking for this loon, this is really none of our business.

It's not up to you to decide what behavior you will tolerate when it's none of your business.

Hannity was making so many excuses for The Bride of Goofenstein on the radio today, I thought he might propose to her himself! I had to turn it off.

I think I know what the issue is and why she ran even though her running made no sense at all and is inexcusable.

However, from what I understand she and her fiance have not had sex, and I believe Jennifer might be a virgin. Honestly, I think she wasn't so afraid to get married as she was more afraid of having sex. I've seen this happen with some women who know nothing about it and go into a marriage scared to death. Jennifer was raised in a very Conservative family and I bet you dollars to donuts she was never taught a thing about sex and her mom and dad didn't even hint at what it was. Also, the kind of friends she had I bet she never confided in them about it either as from the type of place Jennifer came from NO one dare talk about Sex. I came from a place like that and know girls like Jennifer. I myself was not one of them, but I knew a few like that who knew nothing about sex and freaked about having to do that on the big night. It has such high expectations and if you aren't stable enough you might just flip out over it.

So, this is my thinking when I watched the Hannity interview tonight. It just hit me that was it! that is why she ran!

It's her own damn fault that this has become a public spectable and that gives us the right to comment on her really appalling behavior.

Of course you can comment, as can I. I think they're all a bunch of clueless nitwits, from the runaway bride, to her doltish fiance, to the sport-shirt wearing daddies, to the "they never did it" pastors, to the "Jesus loves her" friends.

These people confirm every stereotype in the book about southerners.

But, ultimately, what they do is none of our business.
