A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....05-02-05....Military Monday
Billie, The Mayor

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

The Devil's Soup Bowl

Read:
Matthew 4:1-11

When [the devil] speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. -John 8:44

Bible In One Year: Psalm 64-66

cover While my sons-in-law and I were hiking in a state park last summer, we noticed a trail marker that pointed toward something called The Devil's Soup Bowl. Intrigued, we took off for this geologic formation. As we went, we joked about the kind of soup we might find in the bowl.

When we arrived, we discovered it to be a large sunken area of land-something like a deep lake without any water in it. We were rather disappointed to discover that The Devil's Soup Bowl was filled with nothing but trees and weeds.

The Devil's Soup Bowl is the perfect name for a formation that offers something of interest but ends up providing nothing, because the devil is a deceiver. His menu is a bowl of tricks that delivers only empty promises and broken dreams.

Satan began his deceitful work of substituting nothing for something when he tricked Eve in the Garden of Eden, and he has not changed his plan. He tried his deceit on Jesus, but the Lord resisted and "the devil left Him" (Matthew 4:9-11).

So how do you know if you are being offered one of Satan's lies? Test new ideas with Scripture. Consult with people you trust to be godly and wise. And pray.

Don't fall for the devil's bowl of empty lies. -Dave Branon

Satan's a liar, deceiving all men,
Subtly he causes their fall into sin;
But his sly methods we surely can know,
Looking to Jesus wherever we go. -D. De Haan

Satan offers nothing but tricks and deceit.

American Forces Press Service

MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT PARRIS ISLAND, S.C., April 28, 2005 - For one day at least, the 54 civilian leaders became members of one of the nation's most elite corps of military men and women - the United States Marine Corps.

From the moment members of the DoD-sponsored Joint Civilian Orientation Conference - JCOC 69 - arrived here early April 27, they were treated like every other raw recruit. Standing in the famous "yellow footprints" that mark the beginning of the induction process, they came face to face with a drill instructor who taught them in quick order how to articulate "Yes, Sir," "No, Sir," and "Aye, Sir," at the tops of their lungs.

The group then proceeded through Receiving and Processing. The first stop was the barbershop, where three JCOC participants volunteered for a buzz cut and didn't even flinch when a solo inductee - not part of the group - watched his shoulder-length locks hit the barbershop floor.

Then it was time to get suited up. Each male and female participant was marched - double time - through the sizing-up process, handed a set of Marine fatigues, boots, socks, T-shirt, belt, buckle, cap and bag and turned out for a day of basic training.

After viewing a short video and getting camouflage face paint and enough bug repellant to ward off the famed Parris Island mosquitoes and sand fleas, the group set out to learn what basic training is all about.

Parris Island is the birthplace of trained Marines. Recruits at this main depot for new recruits from the eastern half of the United States learn the core Marine values of honor, courage and commitment, and undergo 12 weeks of some of the most intensive training in the services. About 19,000 recruits are trained here each year.

Basic training culminates in "The Crucible," 54 hours that form the final, extreme test in the rite of passage from recruit to Marine. Parris Island commander Brig. Gen. Richard Tyron called it "a defining moment." "The transformation is incredible; the change, forever," he said of The Crucible.

The JCOC group observed two of the four events that comprise The Crucible. They also could actively participate in training activities. They quickly entered into both the spirit and the reality of events.

The first event was a 47-foot tower where recruits were conducting rappelling. Over half of the 54 JCOC participants - men and women - elected to rappel down the tower under the watchful eyes of instructors.

Toni Fillip, a St. Louis police captain, was among those who dared to step backward off the tower. "I'm 56 years old," she said, "and I wanted to see what I could do. I've always loved a challenge, I'm always looking for new ones, and so I did it."

Asked to describe how she felt after accomplishing the feat she replied, "Wonderful, exhilarated. It was an adrenaline rush."

The JCOC group watched as recruits in Day 2 of The Crucible tested their skills in a combat assault environment, moving through dangerous areas, climbing over walls and under concertina wire, amid simulated mortar and machine-gun "enemy" fire.

They watched as Crucible recruits charged and pounded each other with pugil sticks -- thick wooden poles with padded ends -- in a ring filled with mulch and surrounded by rubber tires. Four JCOC participants tested their own prowess with the sticks.

As the day went on, the JCOC group was served a lunch of MREs - meals ready to eat -- and were oriented on both the M-16AZ service rifle and the M-9 9 mm pistol. The firearms training took place in an indoor facility that can simulate almost any outdoor condition, including wind and rain, and even a jammed weapon. Later, participants went to an outdoor range where they had the opportunity to step into a bunker and fire at targets up to 500 feet away with live ammunition.

As they finished up their day in the life of Marine boot camp, Tryon told them, "You have now been to Parris Island. You have touched the fabric of the Marine Corps. This is where it starts, where we transform recruits into Marines.

"They know when they get through this," Tryon said of newly minted Marines, "that graduation is not a destination but a milestone in a journey. Whether that journey lasts four years or 40 years, it will make them better Marines and better citizens.

"On your journey across this country," the recruit depot commander told the JCOC participants, "you will see a broad array of military service, each an arrow in the quiver of our national defense. Take it back to your communities. Tell everyone you meet what you've seen and what you have experienced.

"You can now speak with authority," he added.

Paul Foster, president and chief executive officer of Western Refining Co. of El Paso, Texas, described his Parris Island day as "awesome."

"You always hear about kids going through boot camp. Now I realize how significant it is. It was impressive," he said, "a life-changing experience."

JCOC is a weeklong, multiservice orientation program for civilian public-opinion leaders. Participants attend Pentagon briefings by senior leaders and travel to military installations throughout DoD to observe exercises and participate in military training.

On military Monday I thought it was worth remembering those who lost their lives in what was called the Great War, the war to end all wars (1914-18).

Unfortunately this has proved not to be the case and we still have brave men and women fighting and loosing their lives to give us the freedom that we all so treasure.

Back in 2000 I spent a weekend in Paris with a friend celebrating their 50th birthday during that time we visited Notre-dame Cathedral and I took the following photograph which is to commemorate the people of the British Empire that lost their lives in the 1st World War let us not forget that this included Canadians, South Africans, Australians and New Zea-landers.

The British Empire now commonwealth and America over the years have fought for freedom and justice worldwide and continue to do so maybe at present not a full compliment of countries but still many of them.

God Bless our Military wherever they are in the world and from whatever country they come from in their unwavering commitment to serve to give freedom to all.

A very good morning (PM there, right?) Thanks Snugs. You are absolutely right re: WW1 I have never been to Europe. If I ever get the chance it will need to be a several month trip to see all on "my list".

As I am not the political "junkie" most here are at FR, my response is often movies.

A Very Long Engagement is a recent movie involving WW1. I had grand parents who were soldiers in the GREAT war.. both made it back. Awfully high amount of causalities

I don't recall a WW1 memorial in DC. The new WW2 one in wonderful

The one press conference went well, just what they finally show on TV is questionable.

I am waiting for sound bytes to be posted in a film clip.
Nothing was in the newspapers so there was nothing to post.

It will get better soon.

"The Devil's Soup Bowl is the perfect name for a formation that offers something of interest but ends up providing nothing, because the devil is a deceiver. His menu is a bowl of tricks that delivers only empty promises and broken dreams."

Well said. I also recommend, in this category, Peter Jones' book "Gospel Truth and Pagan Lies"
