Republicans vow retaliation in ethics feud
Democrats are told to expect rash of inquiries into actions
By KAREN MacPHERSON
BLADE WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Angry House Republicans yesterday warned their Democratic colleagues to expect a spate of inquiries into possible ethics violations in retaliation for forcing GOP leaders to jettison controversial new rules for ethics probes.

The Republican admonitions came a day after House GOP leaders, under intense pressure from Democrats, made a rare policy reversal and grudgingly scrapped ethics rules they had pushed through the House only a few months ago.

Republicans contended the rules made the ethics process more fair and efficient. Democrats, however, argued that the rules were intended to protect House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R., Texas), who is facing questions about his overseas travel and ties to a lobbyist under federal investigation.

Democrats had refused to allow the House ethics committee to meet this year until Republicans agreed to abandon those rules and go back to the previous procedures. Democrats also have repeatedly highlighted what they termed "an ethical cloud" hanging over Mr. DeLay, infuriating Republicans.

Now Republicans are saying that Democrats' own alleged ethical travel-related lapses could become political fodder, echoing recent remarks by House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R., Ill.) that there are "four or five cases out there dealing with top-level Democrats," whom he didn't name.

"I certainly do see that the Republicans are not going to sit back and have the Democrats use the ethics process for political purposes without a push back," said Rep. Jack Kingston (R., Ga.), the vice chairman of the House Republican Conference. "[The Democrats] will be educated that this is the kind of ethics war, or ethics atmosphere, that they have created."

But House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) said yesterday that Democrats aren't afraid of further investigations, noting Democrats wouldn't have pushed so hard to reverse the ethics rules if they were worried about their own ethics problems.

They're worried...

It is time to fight fire with fire.
The bottom-feeding Dems too used to the weak Repubs, and pushing them around....
Run these liberal cockroaches out into the light of day -- I think they should start with Pelosi, that communist maggot. One more facelift, and she will have a goat-tee!!!

Pisofi has a lot to worry about herself. When they say they are not worried, that means they are. Lying itch.

AMEN!  We could have a LOT of fun with this, a Republican Inquisition if you will, but we are the party of wimps.  Time to fold like a cheap suit.  "If we're nice to the Democrats, maybe they won't hurt us!"

Isn't there one set of ethics rules that applies to Democrats (considered ethical unless they hang with the likes of Zell) and another that applies to Republicans (very strict) and still a more stringent variety that applies to Republican leaders, implicit in the system, to ensure fairness?

These weak Repubs are pathetic. There are far too many in Congress who have been there for so long, they still think they are the minority.

Newt, and Delay are the only two true fighters that come to mind. I knew when they appointed Frisk that we were in serious trouble. Frist never had enough political experience to be a leader. In politics, good guys DO NOT finish first.

I supported, and still support, GWB. His lack of going after the dems and the media is a discouraging.

Clinton knew how to play the game. GWB, doesn't. Can anyone remember slick willy pounding the podium, screaming that all the Republicans do is say NO NO NO NO? Well I do.

Where is the anger coming from GWB? Killing them with kindness isn't working.

If you're a leftist, anything goes as long as you get elected. Principles are something that you use to attack them as believe in them. They got this idea from Antonio Gramsci.

"Republicans vow retaliation in ethics feud"

Yeah, yeah, yeah. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.....

The democrats are absolute pure evil and the enemy of America, but don't depend on the Republicans to be anything other than sick, pathetic enablers. We need a 12 step organization for these Republican co-dependent enablers.

We have to take everything at FACE VALUE. You are right.
The Repubs ARE WEAK. If they don't fight NOW, they are finished --- and the Dems may just walk a Marxist into the White House in 2008...

I'm on the same page as you. As far back as I can remember the Republicans have made just a bunch of empty threats and usually cave when push comes to shove. Even though they are in the majority I still feel like they are in the minority and as such has caused me to lose A LOT of faith in them. But for our sake, lets hope they actually do pursue this with a little more tenacity than they have done in the past.

The truth is that Republican, Democrat, Independent all should be equally investigated if there are ethics violation or questions of them.... This club of elites should be completely transparent in that regard, imo.
