Senate majority leader says he’ll insist on up-or-down votes on Bush nominees

Updated: 2:46 p.m. ET April 27, 2005 - WASHINGTON - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist ruled out Tuesday a deal with Democrats on confirming some of President Bush’s judicial nominees whom they’d blocked last year, in return for other nominees’ being withdrawn.

Democratic sources had floated the idea Monday of a potential trade-off.

“My goal is to have fair up-or-down votes on judicial nominees,” he told reporters at a morning briefing. When reporters asked about a compromise, Frist said, “if the question is ‘are you going to shift from that principle (of up-or-down votes on nominees), the answer is no.”

Frist said he would not ask President Bush to withdraw any of his nominees to the federal bench. He added, “At the end of the day, one will be left standing — the Constitution, which allows up-or-down votes — or the filibuster.”

If it takes him this long to grow a pair, maybe he'll do something about immigration in his second presidential term, as he sees it.

Knock off the big talk and DO something, Frist.

Frist has a lack of testicular fortitude.

Good News! Good News!

However, I'm still looking foreward to the impeachment of sitting judges who have not acted in good behaviour, and the nullification of what might have been unconstitutional decisions.

Frist needs to settle this issue now. Ducking it now will only lead to a much bigger, much uglier fight when it comes time to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court. Then the Donks will really be desperate.

If the Donks were smart, they would let these judges go by voting for cloture, to maintin the option of Filibustering later, when it really counts. But they really aren't all that smart, are they?

If Frist deals now, he is saying that Filibustering is an acceptable practice for confirmation of judges. That means only compromise candidates can be considered for the next vacancy on the Supreme Court.

That would be a deal breaker for me. If the Republicans cannot get the issue of confirmation of Federal Judges resolved favorably, I will not support them in the future. Nothing else they do is a tenth as important. The liberal straglehold on the Judiciary is their last Lever of Power, and they are pulling on it ruthlessly. It must be removed.

You are exactly right. If the Republicans don't stand up for the judges, nothing else matters. As you say, the liberal courts are the last refuge of the leftist garbage called Democraps. They have to be put back in order and now is the time.

They're smart enough to know that if they do a real filibuster, they'll lose. All of these obstruction tactics are being done because they can't win if they're honest about their agenda. They have to lie and hope their lies will be believed.

Frist has a lack of testicular fortitude.

Doesn't sound like it with this statment:

Frist said he would not ask President Bush to withdraw any of his nominees to the federal bench. He added, “At the end of the day, one will be left standing — the Constitution, which allows up-or-down votes — or the filibuster.”

They are going to trade Bolton for judges.

If the deal includes a rule that Filibusters can not be used on future judical nominees, I would take it!

Well that wouldn't be so bad, I'm sure the President can find another bulldog to be the UN Ambassador.

That said, I'm still hoping for the Constitutional option of changing the Senate rules to prevent filibusters on nominations, judcial or executive.
