Several years ago a girl friend of mine found a toddler dead in the pond behind her home. The child walked about 300 yards, crossed one road and through three fences, and somehow fell into the pond. The parents were both passed out in their living room when authorities arrived.

That is a horrible story- I hope those parents are in prison.

Strange things do happen. My brother's best friend lost his 6 year old son years ago when he drowned in a mud puddle. A big one to be sure. I'm so sorry to hear this.

I'm not going to rush to judgement on this one, but I have to say that I remember having to take my kids into the bathroom with me, or at least the bedroom, where I could keep an eye on them. It was years before I could expect to even have peace in the bathroom. I suspect that the woman was in the bathroom for more than two minutes.

I have a pond in my yard, too. Thankfully, it never posed a problem.
When my kids were toddlers, they were smart enough to open locked doors and windows. One day I found my boys on the roof! They managed to climb there from their bedroom window. I tried to nail the windows shut, but their rooms got too hot in the summer. Another time I searched for hours before finally finding my son asleep on the floor in the back seat of my car, inside our attatched garage. Thankfully, it wasn't too hot or cold that day. He told me he was hiding from me, and got tired. (Argh!)
They still laugh about all the bars I put on the upstairs windows, and hook and eye latches at the very top of all the doors leading outside.
