Than I'll take back MTV and substitute Primetime TV. The fact is teenagers see 10 times worse everyday, in movies, video and TV. To feign outrage now, after the genie's been out of the bottle for a long time, is just naive.
So now that teens are already corrupted, further efforts to bring decency into their lives is naive?
No one is feigning anything. I don't pretend that primetime TV is any better. What was once described as the "great wasteland" in the 50s, has achieved that and worse.
However, comparative moral equivalence doesn't work in this situation, either. Just because the kids have seen garbage elswhere, does not mean that the school has to underscore it with the subtle message that this is as good as it gets. If the schools don't introduce the kids to the notion that there is something better and the parents aren't paying attention, where will the kids learn what constitutes better "entertainment" than Survivor, or video games, or MTV or other garbage to which they are introduced?
