IANAL, but since the amount charged for newspaper advertising is based on circulation figures, falsifying those numbers could be considered committing fraud on their advertisers. They could be open to criminal, civil, and SEC penalties.
IANAL? I Am Not A Liberal?
"since the amount charged for newspaper advertising is based on circulation figures, falsifying those numbers could be considered committing fraud on their advertisers. They could be open to criminal, civil, and SEC penalties."
Maybe a few local Freepers could buy a small classified ad saying "Support the Boy Scouts, Salvation Army and Free Republic".
Then, they could file a complaint with the local DA, state AG and the SEC re fraud re falsified circulation numbers.
That might be a lot of fun to watch.
