DALLAS Belo Corp. said Thursday that upcoming Audit Bureau of Circulation figures will show that its flagship Dallas Morning News will take a circulation hit of about 13% on Sundays and 9% on other days, for the most recent six-month period.
It said circulation at its Providence (R.I.) Journal will be down about 1%, with The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., off 3% Sundays and 2% other days.
Belo Corp. also disclosed that it received a subpoena this week from local prosecutors regarding overstated circulation figures at the Morning News.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert W. Decherd said the company will cooperate fully with this week's subpoena from the Dallas County District Attorney for documents relating to the case.
The investigation focuses on whether there was any criminal wrongdoing related to the circulation statements, Rachel Horton, a spokeswoman for Dallas County District Attorney Bill Hill, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Horton said the district attorney's office has been investigating the issue since the Belo Corp., disclosed the problem to stockholders in August 2004. She declined further comment, citing the ongoing investigation, according to the Star-Telegram.
The circulation overstatement is already under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
If the paper wants to stand with the criminal immigration movement, let them go under. The liberals newest name calling trick is to call us "bullies". I guess if we disagree with their great liberal wisdom, and dare to stand up to our betters, that that's what we'll be called. So be it. Go for it O'Reilly, we're with you.

Then, they could file a complaint with the local DA, state AG and the SEC re fraud re falsified circulation numbers.
That might be a lot of fun to watch.
Not good I guess, but I bet it would take off like FNC did and lead the way to profit from paper once again.

An item of curiousity; I now wonder(even more than before) just how reliable the Nielsen(or whatever) ratings are re the broadcast media? They have their transparent "sweeps" programming, what, quarterly? During this week long(?) period, there's some things on the teevee almost worth watching. It would appear for all the world the "sweeps" yield inflated numbers when compared to typical audiences. But no one seems to be concerned about the apparent incongruity. Seems odd to me, but I may be missing something.

Isn't that the funny part? You'd think newspapers would realize that if they'd just dump taking a stand on social issues and drop the editorializing (as if anyone cares who or what they recommend) they'd at least double their circulation.
But no. They hire Blacks to write about Black issues, Hispanics to write about Hispanic issues and Homosexual-Americans to write about Gay issues.
*AND* the paper is usually filled with stories written by journalists employed at other papers. Like I could give a rat's behind what some writer for the NYT says about Kennedy Space Center.

"Almost* the operative & key word here, because speaking for myself it ain't even close to an "almost", it's an "is".
My bride & I have been talking discussing dumping DirecTV since it's a rare evening when we sit down to relax with some "entertainment" we can find one single thing of interest that'd stimulate, never-mind entertain.
But for the fact she's a rabid Michigan Wolverine fan and as such enjoys the game *once* a week on a Saturday, the decision would be a slam-dunk.

It should seem odd and you're not missing anything, either.
If memory serves me correct it wasn't all that long ago (2+ years or so?) Nielsen faced accusation(s) ACN were up to precisely the shenanigans you've suggested.
By *whom* I cannot recall at this time but it'd be a safe bet it could've been one or more of the largest advertisers.
Just like the realty outfit in Milw who spends a HUGE amount of their advertising dollars with the city's only rag, these are the organizations being raped the worst by the phony, inflated, self-serving numbers.
Interestingly enough the entire ACN matter was dropped [read: covered up] quickly as if it were a STD & dropped just as quickly completely off the radar.
Not that we didn't already realize it, but, there're mighty powerful *&* corrupt forces at work out there & this was a *splendid* -- albeit subtle -- example of those forces "at work."

Right now I have free unordered copies of the Dallas Morning News cluttering up my driveway. I'll throw them away tomorrow. Is this a sign of desperation?
I don't think that's such a far-fetched dream.
The paper could have a national front page- fair and balanced, and could have a local sports section, and metro section.
Most papers get the rest of their stuff from syndication anyway.
I'm old school, I want my paper, but The Dallas Morning News is the WORST ... or one of the worst on liberal slant.
Plus, they make all these little 'cosmetic' changes that just make the paper worse and harder to read.
They abandon their core of people who take newspapers and try to attract people who never will.
Their DC reporters have drinks with the NY Times reporters daily and either use the Times stuff directly or parrot it.
Even their entertainment pages praise movies like Good Night and Good Luck and BB Mountain while being tepid about Narnia type movies (of which there are few). Ed Bark actually praised Mary Mapes's book, suggesting we 'open our minds' and read it.
I still take it but it usually takes me 5 seconds or less to get mad.
In case someone is planning is ask why, the domestic partner likes the sports section.
