Senate Bolsters Enforcement Against Illegal Aliens

Senate Bolsters Enforcement Against Illegal Aliens (Last Updated: 9:00am, Thursday) In a 65-34 vote on Wednesday, the Senate approved an additional 1,068 immigration enforcement agents as part of the Iraq supplemental spending bill. It was a rebuff to President Bush who had asked for only 210 extra. The $389.6 million immigration reduction measure was proposed by Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) and passed with unanimous support among the 44 Democrats and approval by 21 of the 55 Republicans. If approved in a joint Senate/House Conference Committee, it would provide for 650 additional Border Patrol, 418 new interior enforcement agents to detect and deport illegal aliens, and extra detention facilities. On Tuesday, the Senate failed to attach the AgJOBS amnesty to the bill -- another giant victory for those desiring reduced illegal and legal immigration. But it did potentially triple the number of foreign seasonal workers to allowed into the country on temporary visas. Senators declined for procedural and other reasons to vote on a large number of other amendments to increase immigration and foreign workers.

This amendment seems to come out of the blue. The Iraq War Supplemental Funding Bill is an appropriations bill so this money would be available immediately rather than waiting for the 2000 new agents that were authorized and supposed to be funded in 2006. It seems like good news. I hope that it survives the Joint Senate/House Comittee that will reconcile the two versions of the Iraw War Funding Bill.

Interesting that 34 Republicans voted against hiring more border patrol agents and this amendment was primarily passed by Democrats (including Hellary).

LOL, they don't care about their base. They care about Mr. Fox, and all the illegal aliens who have more voice than their voice.

It's past hard to believe.. it's mind boggling. If the Dim's actually do this and start hammering us on the immigration issue, we'll be twisting in the wind next year and lose the house and senate.

Not JUST because of this issue, but it sure as hell won't help.

We need illegal invaders and all the crime and terror they bring..

The best way to justify constitutional infringements as needed
and never will they be reversed any more than Bubba's executive orders were...

imo

It's telling that a paltry 21 Republicans would support this bill. Not having read anything about what all "Sheets" Byrd might have slipped into his add-on, I find that the 34 RINOs voting NO had better be hearing from their "homeboys" next election.

The RINOs are all supporting the business pacs who wish cheap labor, and I don't in principle disagree, but at a very high cost to the taxpayer, who is just plain sick and tired of supporting cheap labor of illegals in the form of health, education and criminal enforcement, just to name a few.

No. The Real ID Act has been attached to the House but not the Senate version of the Iraq War Supplemental funding bill. The Real ID Act denies drivers licenses to illegals and set some national standards, allows the border fence near San Diego to be completed and toughens some asylum laws so they are harder to be abused by terrorists.

I don't know anything more about the Amendment I posted above except what you can read. It seems to appropriate money for hiring 600+ new border patrol agents, and 400+ new interior enforcement ICE agents and to build some more detention space so we don't have to play catch and release with the illegals. This amendment is in the Senate version but not the House version.

So now it will go to the Joint Senate House Committee. In my view the best outcome will be that the committee keeps the Real ID Act from the House version and keeps the Border Patrol expansion stuff from the Senate version. We'll see what they do.

If you are not a member you should consider joining up with Numbersusa.com because they make it really easy to send faxes to lobby your representatives and others for the desired outcome.

Amazingly, we have some American Border Patrol Agents over there patrolling the Iraq border so you could be right.

But I kind of doubt that is what they are talking about.

"WAKE UP, YOU CLUELESS KNUCKLEHEADS, AND LISTEN TO YOUR BASE!"

The base is slowly immigrating to 3rd parties as the President actively recruits illegals for the "Party of the Future".

Maybe, but it is possible. We patrol foreign borders and ignore our own. Now that makes sense, (NOT)

Excellent comment! The senate and our president are a bunch of whimpy RINOs who could care less about the conservatives who put them in office.
