Link found between Pearl’s killers, Muslim charity

KARACHI: Pakistani investigators have found a definite and irrevocable link between a Muslim charity and one of the four suspects believed to be involved in the murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in February 2002.

A ‘Trust Deed’, retrieved from at least two banks where Al-Akhtar Trust International outlawed by the American Treasury Department in 2003 for having links with Taliban and Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda network has it accounts, shows that Saud Memon is one of the eleven trustees of the trust, highly placed sources told Daily Times on Monday.

The sources said the name of Saud Memon, who owns the shed where Pearl’s remains were found, appeared at number nine (9) on the list of the 11-member Board of Trustees. Saud Memon, an industrialist, had been named by several arrested members of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Al-Almi as their chief financial backer.

The sources said Saud Memon’s particulars in the ‘Trust Deed’ and the Red Book of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Sindh, matched 100 percent. Carrying a head money of Rs3 million, Saud Memon has been dealing in yarn and fabric. The sources noted that Saud Memon’s date of birth, his father’s name and his citizenship (National Identity Card number) were identical on the CID Red Book and the Trust Deed.

They said that, besides Saud Memon (son of Mohammad Siddiq Ismail), the names of Moulana Mohammad Mazhar, Moulana Mohammad Ibrahim, Kamran Chapra, Mufti Abdul Rehman Rehmani, Hafiz Mohammad Ismail, Moulana Abdul Rehman, Moulana Abdul Rehman Memon, Afaq-ur-Rehman Khan, Khalil-ur-Rehman and Froz Abdullah appeared in the ‘Trust Deed’ registered with the Registrar T-Division Karachi on April 16, 2000. Several police officers, who have been involved in the investigations into the murder of Daniel Pearl, believed that Saud Memon was the man who had driven three Arabs to his estate in North Karachi, where Pearl had been held till the day of his slaying.

Shortly after Pearl’s murder, the police sealed Saud Memon’s home in Karachi, where he also ran his garment business. Saud Memon remains one of the key figures still at large in the Pearl slaying case. His photo along with those of other alleged conspirators have been published throughout Pakistan and a reward has been offered for information leading to their arrest. According to the CID Red Book updated in December 2004, Saud Memon was responsible for receiving funds from Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda network and distributing them among almost all jihadi outfits operating in Pakistan.

The investigators still working on the Pearl murder case believed that Saud had fled the country. Four men – British-born Ahmed Omer Saeed Sheikh and three Pakistanis, namely, Fahad Naseem, Salman Saqib and Shaikh Mohammad Adil, were convicted for Pearl’s murder in July 2003.

Afghans Turning in Weapons to Military, Civil Authorities

Afghan citizens, police and soldiers turned in three caches of munitions at separate locations near Bagram April 17.  Together, the caches contained more than 400 mortars, 75 artillery rounds, 31 rockets, 10 rocket-propelled grenades, nine hand grenades, and hundreds of small-arms rounds.

One cache was destroyed where it was discovered. The two others were transported to local coalition bases for later destruction.

Two improvised explosive devises were also discovered the same day in Helmand province -- one by the Afghan National Army outside of Lashkar Gah, the other by the Garmser district police along a dirt road leading to a small village in that district. Both Afghan citizens and coalition forces travel the road frequently.

"Today, more then half of the IEDs are discovered before they detonate, and 90 percent of all discoveries are the result of an Afghan coming forward with the information," said Army Lt. Col. Jack Knox, commander of the coalition's IED task force. "Afghans are reporting the discovery of an IED to either the Afghan National Army, the Afghan National Police or directly to coalition forces."

Knox also noted that only four percent of the IEDs turned in are linked to any kind of monetary reward. “The remaining 96 percent are the direct result of a desire to cooperate with the Afghan government and with Combined Joint Task Force 76,” he said. “Overall, there’s been an upswing in the turn-in of caches. People realize that winning the IED fight is a means of the return of stability and law and order to this country."

In Dawlet Shah, a district in eastern Laghman province, the local police chief turned over another weapons cache to the Afghan National Police April 16. The ANP, in turn, handed the cache over to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, at its forward operating base in the province.

This cache consisted of various munitions and weapon parts, including three 82 mm mortar rounds, three Russian machine guns ( circa 1940s ), three RPG launchers, six rocket launchers, one DShK machine gun, and 38 boxes of 12.7 mm ammunition. All items were in serviceable condition, and are awaiting disposal by explosive –ordnance disposal personnel.

Russian troops kill 7 gunmen in Chechnya

MOSCOW, April 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Russian federal troops killed 7 gunmen during an operation after they discovered a major rebel base in the Vedeno region of the Chechen republic, a spokesman forthe federal forces in the North Caucasus said Tuesday.

Federal forces exchanged fire with the rebels, shelling the base and killing seven rebels. Some rebels, including a few injured, managed to escape, according to Shabalkin.

Several Kalashnikov assault rifles, an anti-tank grenade launcher, ammunition, explosive devices and medicine were found atthe base, which consisted of several dug-outs, trenches and tents,he said.

"The base was built in a significant distance from the nearest community and was difficult to access," the spokesman said.

The medical and security equipment found at the base and the mines discovered on all the roads leading to it indicate the base could have served as a hideout for major guerrilla leaders, Shabalkin said.

Basayev himself could have visited the hideout from time to time, he added. Enditem

No, never forget Danny. From all accounts, he was a lovely, generous, charitable, caring man.

I read the book written by his wife, Marianne Pearl, and cried for days..I am sure he is in heaven and looks down on his beautiful son and smiles that wonderful smile. Thanks for the reminder of Daniel Pearl.

This is someone's tribute site to him. I often reference back to his articles there. He was way to close to something that made him a target.

I have heard this same thing coming from units in theater, too.

It's working...

Articles like these must mean that terrorists are spending more time watching their backs than organizing attacks. Works for me. I especially like the one where the terrorists blew themselves up in the car.
