To 17-year-old Rachel Ward, the Lacoste shirt with its signature crocodile logo is the cutting edge of fashion.
"I'm very into it," said the Scituate High School student. She knows the iconically preppy shirts were big back in the early '80s -- her mom has told her all about it. But as far as she's concerned, that doesn't make preppy any less cool.

But, will she wear the collar up or down??
Lacoste makes a nice shirt - preppy or not. I got wind of them when I was going to school in Europe in the '70s (not the 80's). That said, I buy Land's End now.
The 80's are hip again. My teen was thrilled to discover I had a pair a real stirrup pants left in a drawer. She loves wear them to school. Ugly has no statute of limitations.
Prep never dies....it just keeps going back to school.....
Preppy rules AGAIN??? When did it rule the first time? I saw the sneering idiots who thought they were so cool the first time around - they looked like idiots!
I always hated the prep look, and I went to prep school in the early 80's.
I just want "slut chic" to be over....yesterday.
Hey, for myself, I hope the 80's fashions come back. Even the worst stuff - parachute pants, etc. - is light years gentler on the eye than the 60s/70s retread crap that's been dragging on over the past decade.
Guess it's time to dust off my old stand-by.
Hurrah!
Wow! I can break out my pink and green plaid shorts all over again. Throw in some knee socks and loafers and I'll be on top of the fashion world.
Amen, my friend. Hip- hugging bellbottoms make even the most shapely babe look like a dumpy frump (IMHO). Gimme tight jeans any day!
A lot of the newer "progressive" music has definitely got an '80's hook to it.

Those hip-hugger things don't even look comfortable. Blech.

Ping list for the discussion of the politics and social (and sometimes nostalgic) aspects that directly effect Gen-Reagan/Generation-X (Those born from 1965-1981) including all the spending previous generations (i.e. The Baby Boomers) are doing that Gen-X and Y will end up paying for.

This article makes it sound as though preppy clothing went out of style for awhile. Really? Did it? Did I miss something? How about that. All these years I've been wearing my khaki skirts and blue blazers and didn't notice that nobody else was doing the same.
Ditto to that...
For those who read this book in the 1980's when it was first published, go back and read it again. You will be amazed at how thoroughly boring and dreary the preppies sound. I guess that is the point, but I would rather be a Reagan Republican with a thought or two in my head, rather than a country club (i.e., Preppie) Republican following the sloshed WASP herd (or should it be swarm?)
