BEAVER, Okla. - James Pratt has a chip on his shoulder -- a cow chip.

The local fire chief is ready to defend his title Saturday at the World Champion Cow Chip Throwing Contest.

About 150 people usually compete in the event, choosing from about 230 cow chips. Each contestant gets two throws, with the longest distance winning.

Pratt throws with an overhand, baseball-like motion. "I've seen people throw like a discus and under their leg," he said. "They've tried everything."

He says he doesn't practice but takes care selecting his chips, looking for those that are about 6 inches in diameter and about an inch thick. If the chip is too thin, it breaks in the air.

The record for the contest is 185 feet. Pratt's best is 177 feet, he said.

"I'm after the record, so I can't quit until I get it," he said. "I'm shooting for 200."

But he acknowledges the contest is mostly luck.

"It's how your chip flies," he said.

The contest is part of the annual Cimarron Territory Celebration in this Oklahoma Panhandle town.

The "politically correct" name for cow chips is "organic frizbees".

I remember the first time I told my NYC born-and-bred husband about cow chip bingo, he didn't believe me.

He thought I was making it up LOL
