College student Elle Lahesa described a humiliating experience in her history class the day after Sept. 11, 2001.
At a news conference with reporters this week, Lahesa said professor Donald Barry told a class at Tallahassee Community College that America deserved the terrorist attacks - "every bit of it."
State Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, who stood beside Lahesa, cited the story as the type of radicalism he hopes to quell with a bill intended to protect conservatives on college campuses.
It was a chilling story, except that the professor says it's not true.
"I absolutely deny that," Barry said Wednesday. "If she was under oath, then she committed perjury."
Barry said he wants to appear under oath before Baxley's House Education Council to rebut the allegations.
College administrators on Wednesday called other students in the class to ask what happened. One student agreed to speak with reporters.
"He didn't say anything like that," said Onome Edukore, 22, who was in Barry's Western civilization class the days after Sept. 11.
Not enough info for a determination.
Neither of them at this point. I'm assuming there were more than two students in the class. I'm sure talking to the others would help settle the issue. We shouldn't fall itno the trap of believing one person's accusation just because it fits our political mindset. That's what led liberals to believe Anita Hill's wild claims. We need more evidence than just the one claim.
As Ward Churchill is proud of what he said, this is not quite the same. Too soon to tell but if he did say something like this, he either has shame or lacks the courage of his conviction. If he did not, it is a nasty accusation.
Conservative students who witness such events have to weigh potential adverse effects of siding with the conservative student making the allegations. Such students can be blacklisted afterwards on campus and subsequently receive poor grades, even for good work. Liberal students who wish to come forth in defense of the instructor have no such concerns, and there are almost always some liberal students in any given class who are willing to side with the instructor for ideological reasons or personal gain.
Once it is clear that witness testimony may be conflicting, the balance of reasonable doubt goes in favor of the defendant.
I believe that college students should buy mini tape recorders and record their professor's lectures. That way they could get the largest return for their educational dollar.
heh heh.... anita hill.
I was thinking the same thing(though I didn't have a name to attach to it) about wild claims.
Just curious if everybody else agreed.
