Cobra Helps Thief Escape From Jail (India)

Snakes are often shown coming to the aid of Lord Shiva’s worshippers in Hindi films, but in real life a black cobra helped a thief escape from the police station in Nagaur.

A four feet-long black cobra emerged from a crack inside the wall of the Khinvsar police station’s lock-up in Nagaur. A thief, Badri Ram — said to be a gang leader — was in that lock-up. On seeing the cobra he started crying for help.

Alarmed policemen rushed to the lock-up to find the snake with its hood up hissing inside. The policemen took Badri out and tied him to a tree outside the police station. When they tried to force out the cobra from the vacant lock-up, it disappeared into the very crack from where it had emerged.

The police station in-charge sent for a worker to cement the crack. As cement takes time to catch, policemen feared the snake might appear again. Even Badri was not prepared to risk his life inside the same lock-up again. It was decided that Badri would remain tied to the tree till the next morning.

A policeman was deployed to keep watch on Badri through the night. But when he went to relieve himself early in the morning, Badri made good his escape. The policeman has been suspended.

They don't have real (i.e., metal) handcuffs over there? Man, even with the best handcuff knot in the world, you still have to check from time to time that prisoners haven't worked it loose!

Most probably this occured in one of the more remote areas of India (I am not sure, just my unsubstantiated opinion. Maybe Indian Freepers may try to shed some light on the matter). Although the name of the location is interesting. Nagaur. Unless i am mistaken 'Nag' means snake.
