WCS says Andrews County facility does not violate La Paz Treaty
An environmental group has written to government officials in the Mexican states that border Texas to alert them about a nuclear waste facility being built in West Texas.
In the letter, Nuclear Free Texas claims the proposal violates the international La Paz Treaty. Signed by the United States and Mexico in 1983, the treaty forbids the construction of any facility that could effect the atmosphere 40 miles on either side of the border.
Waste Control Specialists has lodged a permit amendment application with the Department of State Health Services to house U.S. Department of Energy uranium mill tailings at its site in Andrews County, Texas, which is over a hundred miles from the border.
At a Senate Natural Resources Committee hearing on Tuesday, NFT spokeswoman Michele Weston said she had confirmation from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality that the WCS facility is in the Pecos River Basin. The Pecos River feeds the Rio Grande.

Nut Free Texas Ping!
Please let me know if you want on or off this South Texas/Mexico ping list.
And we know how much the Mexicans care about water and international law...so much so that they routinely violate their treaties with us by taking water from the Rio Grande. As for environment, Mexico City is a polluted hell hole.
That's a pretty broad description of "atmosphere"... if this stuff is buried underground, sealed up. Maybe if they had a claim on the groundwater?
Someone will have to explain how underground injection of waste at least 300 miles from Mexico is going to affect their air quality.
Nuclear Free Texas = leftist, liberal, demokkkRAT, progressive, socialist, commie, nazi, fascist, dirtbag, lowlife, subhuman, garbage.
Vicente Fox in 2008. Time to liberate Mexico...and send all the liberals there...
Silly wabbits! Don't they know that La Paz is in Bolivia!
There is a word for the unlawful interference with the lawful administration of government, but I can't recall the word at the moment. It's quite similar to sedition.
Build a border fence with the stuff.
Second the motion!
"Signed by the United States and Mexico in 1983, the treaty forbids the construction of any facility that could effect the atmosphere 40 miles on either side of the border." Yeah I'm sure Mexico hasn't built any facility since 1983 that COULD effect the US atmosphere?
You should see the smoke from the garbage dumps at C. Juarez or C. Acuna when they are burned.
Yes, let Mexico lecture us about the environment. We have been dealing with Mexican sewage forever. But they know our weaknesses well, and our fear of being called politically incorrect names. So yes Mexico, we'll stop the minutemen, and the polluters. You can just keep sending the poison sludge and illegal aliens our way. No problem, we'll keep paying for it all, and your citizen's medical expenses, and schooling for your children as well as incarceration costs for all the criminals you send here.
Suggestion on killing two birds, etc..... If we buried this waste all along the border, then it wouldn't be so "hot" in one place, and maybe all along the border too!!
