And what about logistics for a cardinal "in pectore". Can such a cardinal's identity remain secret while still allowing him a vote? This would mean he'd have to have an absentee vote, and thus some form of envoy or mechanism to cast it. It would also have lots of other issues, as he would be an exception to the rules requiring presence at the Vatican.

Seems to me thats one reason they have to read John Pauls stuff before they vote. If his name is revealed there, then he gets to vote, no problem.

I don't believe a cardinal in pectore can vote -- how would anyone know he was a cardinal? The name would have to be revealed to take part in the conclave -- because if the name is not revealed by the Pope who names such a cardinal, he ceases to be a cardinal upon the Pope's death.

Unless the late Holy Father has revealed his identity in the testament then the person in question is not a Cardinal. To be a Cardinal is to hold a public office.

I'd presume he would be able to attend a conclave, given whatever oppression he is under. I think the title of Cardinal is more for future historical purposes.

He could wear a mask to perserve his secret identity.
