Dangerous as they are... I really love our volcanos and love to see them active. It's a lucky thing to get to see.

My family of 5 (me, hubby, 3 teenage kids) made a trek all the way through the park up to Johnston Ridge over the weekend of July 4, 2002. It was great, but yes, we did run into fog and the drive back down was kinda scary ;-/.
I am amazed that it didn't make it onto FR!

I've still got 3 baby-food jars of the ash that fell in Spokane - 300+ miles away.
The stuff we got was a fine powder - much like flour or Portland Cement. It is my understanding that the closer to the mountain the coarser the ash.
When the mountain blew, a talk radio station became the unofficial source for info. They took calls from the public and answered as best they could.
One guy called and asked, "I understand Burlington-Northern owns the land on Mt. St. Helens. Who do I call to have them get their mountain out of my back yard?"
We've been to St.Lucia a few times over the years. It has an active volcano..and one of the hotels has a golf course that abuts some hot/spring/lava pit thingees.."Out of bounds" and "hazard" there takes on a whole new meaning...
That's a gorgeous drive, but watch the drop offs! It's not fun to come across a snow plow coming down either... July is usually a great time to go :~D
Not Burlington Northern, but Weyerhauser.... but the joke is still a good one ;~D
Nice shots!
The PNW has finally got some snow.

Sounds like something's stuck. The depths and locations for the last few days all look pretty close together.
Fire up the pottery kiln!
I was up there in October waiting for a show but the weather came in and covered the volcano all day!
I shot some video of it before the cloud cover. I took all my camera gear for the trip, but forgot my lenses so the volcano looks far away with the lens I had ( drats!)

I see that ACR made history on Oct21 with the silver fox in this news release http://www.acrtucson.com/UAV/mt_st_helens.pdf
My flight on Oct 15 does not apply to historic events I guess :-)
