Pakistan to buy four warships from China

Monday, 04 April , 2005, 18:35

Islamabad: Pakistan is to buy four frigates for its navy from long-time ally China, the defence ministry said on Monday, ahead of a visit by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

"Pakistan and China have signed four contracts for the construction of four F-22P frigate ships for Pakistan Navy," a Pakistani defence ministry statement said.

The frigates will be equipped with anti-submarine helicopters, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles and other defence systems, the statement added.

"These ships, after construction, will be inducted into Pakistan Navy which would not only enhance the operational capabilities of Pakistan Navy, but will also make impregnable the seaward defence of Pakistan," it said.

The statement did not say how much Pakistan would pay China or how long it would take to build the four warships.

The contracts were signed by Pakistan defence production secretary Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai and a senior Chinese official in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, the defence ministry statement said.

China is Pakistan's strongest ally and Islamabad relies heavily on Beijing for its defence needs.

Many Chinese companies operate in Pakistan and China is involved in the construction of a deep-sea port at Gwadar on the Arabian Sea.

China's Wen arrives in Pakistan on Tuesday for a three-day visit.

Not exactly as design of this class began long before the USSR lifted it's arms embargo on the PRC.I think it's electronics have benefitted from Western military sales to China in the 70s & it's anti-ship missiles are modelled on Western ones.

Nice ships. I am sure the Indian Navy will enjoy sinking them.

An hour after they destroy something, it has to be destroyed again.

Hehe, good one...

As always, what is important is not just the hardware, but how it is used (tactics) and the quality of the personnel (training) and support.

We should never underestimate any potential foe. Remember how lowly we regarded the Japanese Navy prior to WWII...they cleaned our clock even up a few times.

True, and I wonder how much of the Imperial Navy's technology originated in the U.S.?

Obviously, not enough of it!

I think what the Clinton administration did with respect to selling military technology to China was criminal.

As an example, they sold them highly advanced software controlled milling machines that could mill so finely and in such remote crevices that up to 20% the weight of a gearbox or some other componenent could be shaved off.

Those types of savings are HUGE in aeronautical design. And the Clinton administration just gave it to them, no strings attached. Unbelievable.

I've never seen a sweeping bow like this one in any Western navy.

Most of Japanese car and electronics corporations have a murky past providing the Imperial regime with deadly weapons and the like. Remember the Mitsubishi logo, the one with three pointed quadrangles?

The logo is an adaptation of a propeller, synonymous with the warplanes the company used to make for the Imperial military.

I doubt if the Japanese military had any American-made weaponry then. Even the American fighters that Japan has at present are actually made in Japan(Transfer of technology, ToT), I guess, and not in the US.

It's only from what I know, and I may be wrong.

Probebly not much. Even China's "Aegis" system was developed with help from the Russians if memory serves me right. Missiles are another story, thanks to Klinton.

Not if our F-16's, that we STUPIDLY sold to the Paki's, can help it.

At this point of time,it does pay to remember that China operates around 2 warships which use the LM-2500 gas turbines, purchased in the 1980s & their main ASW torpedo is a variant of the baseline MK-46.They would possibly have got Phalanx systems if it weren't for Tianammen.Hence, putting all the blame on Clinton is akin to being blind to the whole issue.

If Im not mistaken, the PAR used on the Type-052C ships were designed with the help of a Ukranian institute.

Thats what americas enemies do, purchase rope.. lots of rope.. Actually HANGING someone is only done their OWN people.. though.. to keep the peace, such as it is..
