Veterans Group Calls on Congress to Impeach George W. Bush and Richard Cheney

ST. LOUIS--On March 30, a national veterans’ organization called for the removal of President George W. Bush and Vice-President Richard Cheney for crimes the group charges were committed during the invasion and occupation of Iraq. In a letter sent to each member of the US House and Senate, Veterans For Peace (VFP) stated that “...This administration’s war on Iraq, in addition to being increasingly unpopular among Americans, is an unmistakable violation of our Constitution and federal law which you have sworn to uphold. In our system, the remedy for such high crimes is clear: this administration must be impeached.”

David Cline, a decorated Vietnam War combat veteran and VFP president, said in a prepared statement to the press, "We do not make this call lightly and as former members of the US armed forces, we take our responsibilities as citizens very seriously. For that reason we believe that when our government conducts a war of aggression on Iraq and commits a growing and appalling series of what must legally be considered war crimes and crimes against humanity in the execution of that war, it violates Article VI of the US Constitution, the War Crimes Act of 1996 (18 U.S.C. § 2441), and numerous international treaties which are legally binding on our nation."

Where did you see Hackworth's name? Not that I doubt it. He's gone off the edge a few times. Before the war his rant was that we weren't prepared for the chemical and bio weapons we were sure to face. After the war it was Bush lied about the weapons. On his website he was fronting for a major msm news organization seeking vets who knew about prisoner abuse and war crimes.
He lost credibility with me when he had two polar opposite descriptions of an incident in Vietnam in two different manuscripts.

I certainly would consider calling for the impeachment for the President political activity. Someone should let the IRS know that they should be investigated and their tax status withdrawn.

I don't know the details, but here is what the IRS says about it. Looking at it, I don't know how they could have qualified for 501(c)3 status in the first place!

Exemption Requirements

http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/article/0,,id=96099,00.html

To be tax-exempt as an organization described in IRC Section 501(c)(3) of the Code, an organization must be organized and operated exclusively for one or more of the purposes set forth in IRC Section 501(c)(3) and none of the earnings of the organization may inure to any private shareholder or individual. In addition, it may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate at all in campaign activity for or against political candidates.

The organizations described in IRC Section 501(c)(3) are commonly referred to under the general heading of "charitable organizations." Organizations described in IRC Section 501(c)(3), other than testing for public safety organizations, are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions in accordance with IRC Section 170.

The exempt purposes set forth in IRC Section 501(c)(3) are charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition, and the prevention of cruelty to children or animals. The term charitable is used in its generally accepted legal sense and includes relief of the poor, the distressed, or the underprivileged; advancement of religion; advancement of education or science; erection or maintenance of public buildings, monuments, or works; lessening the burdens of government; lessening of neighborhood tensions; elimination of prejudice and discrimination; defense of human and civil rights secured by law; and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency.

At first I thought this was a moment for STFU, but then I reconsidered. This moment calls for a stern FOAD.

Veterans for Peace. I actually went to a meeting that they held up here for the grand opening of Military Families Speak Out. Heck they asked for Military Families. We outnumbered them. They weren't happy.

If anyone is interested in what they support in order to maintain a 501(c)3 status check out their links page. Rachael Corrie would be please. Caution you may need to take some phenergan before you visit. A shower would help. I know it helped after visit up close.

Just want you to know that I'm a vet for peace too. Best way to achieve peace is to kick ass.

The President and Vice President and I seem to agree on war policy.

I've saved your info so I can really research what it says tomorrow - but right off the bat - I saw this statment: "it may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate at all in campaign activity for or against political candidates."

"influence legislation" - may not relate to impeachment - but the Articles of Impeachment might be considered legislation - I don't know.

What with tax season upon us - the IRS will be very busy - but I don't want to wait. I'll have to think about it.

I admit I don't know what FOAD means. Couldst thou enlighten me? It looks like something I might need to say sometime.

Thanks for the pings TGYC and Fedora!

This effort is a Clinton-style distraction/diversion, IMO.

Fedora, thank you for posting Hanoi John: Kerry and the Antiwar Movement’s Communist Connections again.  Missed it the first time.
