Federal agents arrested 10 people Tuesday and seized more than 50 machine guns and seven hand grenades in what authorities described as the largest weapon seizure in Southern Illinois.
Most of those arrested are from the Alton-Godfrey area. Police continued to look for one man accused under indictments made public Tuesday.
"These are not sporting guns," said Glenn N. Anderson, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, at a news conference in Fairview Heights. He said the confiscated weapons' only purpose is "to kill." The charges range from blowing up mailboxes to "manufacturing" machine guns by altering existing weapons.
He declined to say what prompted the investigation, which began in mid-January.
He noted that agents discovered racist literature while searching property of one of the accused, Randall Brown, 53, of Godfrey.
Agents found a poster of Adolf Hitler with the caption "When I come back, no more Mr. Nice Guy" and fliers from the National Alliance, a white supremacist group.
Some targets on Brown's property were allegedly given "blackfaces."
Brown is charged with engaging in a business as a manufacturer of firearms, possessing machine guns and related charges.
Anderson said the seized machine guns include AK-47s, Uzis, Thompson submachine guns, and the old belt-fed weapons, such as German World War II-era guns.
They were found in "multiple locations," from basements to storage areas, Tenpas said. Agents also seized silencers claimed to be illegal.

I got the 115 # here. it's a shorter story w/ less detail.
BANG PING.....
And this will be painted by Blago and Daley as a fine reason to take away handguns from peaceful folks.

Ummm, even a sporting gun's purpose is to kill. Or does he think it's sporting to just wound animals?
What?
How reprehensible!
The ones I have are never for killing. One is for airconditioning. Another is for ventilation. And the rest are for starting horse and auto races.
Some people!
Yup. See it's the WEAPONS that are the threat, not the people.
The Second Amendment grants us the right to arms for sporting purposes only. NOT! Yes, I'll admit, I believe we should be able to own any firearm we choose. Speaking of Government, Patrick Henry stated, "if you have no guns and you don't like their imposed tyranny, what will you do, just tell them?
My copy of the Constitution and Bill of rights must be wrong. In my copy of the first amendment, it doesn't say we have the right to keep and bear sporting arms. My copy just says arms.
I'm no sympathizer or fellow traveller with these folks, but they always come for the 'undesireables' first.
LOL!
I always forget about that scene in The Blues Brothers.
First?
Frag or concussive? I hate pulling out shrapnel when I am eating quail.
Ooops. I can never keep straight which of my constitutionally guaranteed rights is being trampled. :-) Sorry about that.
lol!
};O)
What are they doing, tossing the whackers off the bridge in shallow water? ;)
Oh... the HORROR.
I see a new "hate crime" law coming down the pike, and possibly, a total BAN on targets made up depicting minorities as criminals with guns (of course, it's O.K. to hang and/or burn a white President in effigy, etc.).
As if there is an unwritten rule that life-like humanoid targets can NEVER be anything other than white men (and sometimes white women).
"Life-like" SHOULD reflect the real life fact that a large percentage of violent crime is committed by young black inner-city youths, who are often gang-bangers.
But no, even though this is true, we can't have that because it might hurt someone's feelings.
PC is alive and well.
Keep an eye on this. Sometime down the road we'll see if the hoopla is as reported.
There could in fact be a legitimate reason for this. But that reason won't see the light of day.
I'll wait for more info before passing judgement.
I don't trust the extremists. But I trust the ATF even less.
