Worse Than No Reform - The bad news is, Democrats do have ideas for Social Security.
WSJ OPINION JOURNAL.COM ^ | MARCH 29, 2005 | BRENDAN MINITER

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer dropped by our offices recently to talk about, among other things, Social Security. This was no dry, by-the-numbers discussion. Mr. Hoyer clearly feels passionate about the issue and fully understands that what's at stake is not how large grandma's check will be, but how the welfare state will be organized. In the process of making his arguments, he unwittingly demonstrated that the claim that Democrats have no reform ideas is flat wrong. By the end of the meeting it was clear that if Republicans fail to pass Social Security reform this year, they will deserve to lose control of Congress and perhaps even the presidency.

First what ideas do Democrats have for reforming Social Security? President Bush has firmly implanted the idea of reform in the national consciousness, but that it now must take root there over the next four years or so--into the next president's term--before it can be enacted into law. There's even a sound bite: President Hillary Clinton will sign Social Security reform into law, just as Bill Clinton signed welfare reform.

The symmetry is appealing, but misleading. The danger in losing the Social Security fight this year isn't that President Bush's reform agenda will die along with it, but rather that it will live on. President Clinton had to be brought to welfare reform kicking and screaming. But President Hillary or another Democrat will likely be more shrewd and embrace reform.

With the wimpy RINOs in the Senate--I don't doubt a bit the scenario that was presented in this article---

I just don't see any REPS putting their arses on the line to help get this passed, so I don't see anything positive in the future for President Bush---all of the GOP in the House and the Senate are already sweating the next election!

And SWEAT they should!! These spinless propekker heads have a majority in both houses in th eCongress and act like they have to j\have the permission of the Minority to govn the country. It's obvious to me that wee nees to have a new AMERICAN PARTY, that represent the AMERICAN PEOPLE. The Dummos and the Repies have been on a colusion course and have finally been joined at the hip. The Pesident won't defend the borders and the Congress are hollow cadavers of campaign promises that will neve be full filled. Neither the Dems or the Reps should bother to apply for their jobs.

This country started with the common sense of Hardworking everyday, regular ol Americans. Like going to the Pound amd finding the most loyal pip you ever had, no pedigree just a good ol American Mutt. That's what we need in the Congress and in the White House. The down to earth common sense Pro American, American. No Lawyers allowed!!

but how the welfare state will be organized

Equating SS with welfare is a big mistake this author makes. People paid for their SS investment out their pockets from hard-earned money. Rush LImbaugh went on a rant about SS as being nothing but welfare...that is total BS!

It is welfare. The money you paid is long gone. Any money you recieve will be paid by others.

If you're correct, then it's theft.
