Elder abuse spreading as population ages in California

Horrifying as the accounts are, they're becoming more commonplace in California, where the state Department of Justice estimates one in every 20 elderly people are abused or neglected but just one in five cases are reported.

About 200,000 elderly Californians suffer abuse or neglect each year -- two-thirds of them by family members, officials estimated.

It's even a problem at elderly care facilities, with more than 40 percent of the state's 1,352 nursing homes cited for abuse.

Schwarzenegger said he believes there is a better way, ordering his Office of Emergency Services to review all existing programs and recommend improvements by the end of 2006. Hearings will get underway in May, said spokesman Eric Lamoureux.

The older people get, the more vulnerable they become, officials said, and those 80 and older are the fastest-growing segment of California's population.

Elder abuse is often treated the way child abuse and domestic violence were handled until relatively recently, Wong said.

"Far too often it's been considered a family matter and not a crime," Osborn said.

And wait until the baby boom generation gets there in a few years...

I guess, if they can kill Terri Schiavo, a young woman, just for being inconvenient, just wait and see the way older people will start to get euthanized on masse, as they outlive their "usefulness" and become viewed as a burden.

Looks like they are going to "Schaivo" all these poor folks. Maybe not right away, but it will come. If they "Schaivo" them, it will save everyone money and trouble. (May the roast in Hell)

Oh yes....the government will protect women from men, blacks, mexicans, and indians from whites, disabled from the able-bodied, children from their parents, and now parents from their children.

Yes....bureaucrats are the answer to everything...

Yes, Judge Greer has revealed to us what the solution to this problem is. Death by starvation and dehydration (we are assured by those who have not experienced it) is both "painless and even euphoric." These old folks'future is now mapped out for them.

Terri Schiavo is just the first tiny step. In the coming years these types of killings, by legal rulings, will rival those of the baby killings by abortion as granted by other officals who are not elected and answer to no one.

Yes, I know. A very, very horrible commentary on where the silent majority is allowing the decadent minorit to lead us.
