Former President Carter (search) and his wife, Rosalynn, have left the top posts on the board of trustees of the center they founded in 1982 to promote peace and health programs around the world.
They called the move a step toward ensuring The Carter Center's (search) existence beyond their active lives. They remain members of the board.
The Carters resigned as chairman and vice-chair at a meeting Monday. John Moores (search), owner of the San Diego Padres baseball team and a trustee at the center, was elected the board's new chairman.
In a statement Tuesday, the 80-year-old Carter said he and his wife are in good health and plan to continue with the center.
"As its founders, we know The Carter Center will always be linked to our identity and personalities, but we proudly recognize the center has expanded its reach beyond what the two of us contribute," he said.
Center staff have worked at combatting disease in Africa and South America, monitoring elections in nations with emerging democracies and on other projects.
Moores created a foundation in 1989 to distribute treatment for blindness in Africa. It became part of The Carter Center in 1997.

Well, well, well...Three guesses what I'm thinking.
He's going to run again?!
He's dying?
Oil for Food subpoena's to follow.......
That some Oil For Food money found its way into the Carter Center.
He's buying a vacation home in Cuba?
Jimmy's just the tip of the tentacle...
That would rock! 'Bout time that phony got his due...
Check this out.
Yeppers. I bet we won't know the depth of his involvement until after he passes on...
I'll say it again...Jimmy Carter as all of us at FR well know...is the greatest president of the 20th century. Thank God, for him. I mean look at what he did to promote peace in the middle east by not supporting the Shah of Iran and our security in SE Asia during his four years in office with his unilateral disarmament initiatives.
My parents were esp happy with him, because inflation was so high they were able to unload their silver dollar collections for five or six times what they could sell them now for.
Rule number one:
On any given political or social topic...find out where Jimmy Carter, the greatest president of the 20th century, stands on the issue then take the opposing view for the right answer.
They're a waste of good food and water?
more likely Venezuela..

Don't let the door hit you on the way out...jackass

LOL! Funny you should bring this up, I work with a guy who actually said the same thing recently, damn near fell outta my chair AND he was serious!
Thanks for breaking the code for us mewzilla - it's just like with the clintons - whenever they break wind you know it is for some nefarious motive but we sometimes have to rely on our fellow freepers to figure it out.
LOL! Maybe we could hold a fund raiser for a big send off! :D
History may find that Billy was the better brother.
Carter is VERY accomplished.
He gave $1 Billion of US taxpayer money to Kim Jong Il of North Korea to fund the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
He propped up Hugo Chavez in a stolen election and told the Venezuelans to get over it.
He has earned the undying affections of Fidel Castro.
What a guy! (sarcasm off)
Funny funny funny! lol
4 more years of him, and buh bye America
If it were up to him, it wouldn't even take that long.
After consulting with daughter Amy, they decided to catch the next Hale-Bopp comet; for Jimmuh, rumors of terrorist `attack rabbits' this weekend were the final straw . . .
(R: "Good day at the office, Jimbo?" J: "Nah, ah lusted in my heart all day over that new sekertary.")
Oooh, good one.
That's what "Miss Lillian" Carter said. :)
"Moores created a foundation in 1989 to distribute treatment for blindness in Africa. It became part of The Carter Center in 1997"

They found a cure for River Blindness (Onchocersiasis), but not for the variety that afflicts Carter.
Fascinating tidbit. This blindness thing(caused by some riverborne parasite I believe) is the one signature campaign that the Carterites always point to as an example of their wonderful works...and it wasn't even their idea!
Perfect.
Crikey! My local newspaper recently had an (AP) article that gave Carter all the credit and did not once mention Mr. Moones.
No, what Miss Lillian said, and I quote:
"Sometimes, when I look at my children, I think I should have remained a virgin.".
Too bad her common sense and realistic assessment of life failed to pass on to her offspring.
Go Melanie!!!
Inflation and Interest had very little to do with the run-up in the price of silver in 79-80. That was caused by the Hunt bros. trying to corner the market in silver. They wound up defaulting on a bunch of their purchases and settled with Engelhard Min. & Chem. and its Philipp Bros. Div. for $400 milliion when that was still big money. They made other settlements also.
What you say is true.. but let's face it the Hunts could not have pulled that off today... They did it then because inflation rates were ripe for it... As I recall they got burned...
Health programs? Isn't that a euphemism for abortion and condom programs?
Yes they did get burned. A lot of silver started coming out of the woodwork and cabinets where it had lanquished unused and unseen for years. They made settlements with a lot of creditors. The largest being the firms I named in my other post. I was employed in their NYC offices at the time.
As far as it not happening again??? Are you sure you know, just what is causing the present rise in copper and silver prices???
oh, I'm sure it has NOTHING to do with Dr. Stein's outing Jimmuh as a liar, fabricator and historical revisionist. Just NOTHING whatsoever!
I thought that for many years. So did my husband, until he saw Carter at the 2004 Democratic Presidential Convention. He couldn't believe what he saw.
Billy is one of the dearly departed as of Sept.1998. He may still have some beers with him though!
