Fox Astray on Immigration(I say it's time for Mexico to take off the American "training wheels!")
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | 3/23/2005 | Ruben Navarrette Jr.

Posted on 03/23/2005 8:38:02 AM PST by kellynla

San Diego -- PRIMING THE PUMP for his meeting with President Bush at the "Western White House," Mexican President Vicente Fox stirred things up again when he told reporters in Mexico City last week that walls along the U.S.-Mexican border were "discriminatory" and "against freedom."

Asked about a fence that U.S. officials are building along the border south of San Diego -- a barrier referred to, by people on both sides, as the "Tortilla Curtain" -- Fox said the structure "must be demolished."

"No country that is proud of itself should build walls ... it doesn't make any sense," Fox said.

As a Mexican-American born on this side of the Rio Grande, it makes sense to me. A country has the right to protect its borders.

I'll tell you what doesn't make any sense -- that the Mexican president would jeopardize the possibility of achieving even a sliver of immigration reform by spouting off rhetoric that is so irresponsible and so unrealistic.

It's not like chances for reform are all that great. The president's reform plan appears stalled in Congress over objections by fellow Republicans that the plan "rewards lawbreakers" with amnesty.

Congressional Republicans are right about one thing: Amnesty is not the way to go. Forget rewarding lawbreakers. The only reward that illegal immigrants care about is a job, and they have plenty of those. The real problem with amnesty is that is absolves the individual of his responsibility to take the necessary steps to live in the United States legally.

My beef with right-wing elements in Congress is that they tend to be hard on illegal immigrants but soft on those who hire them.

It's time for W to tell Fox to start solving Mexico's problems instead of dumping them on our back porch!

And until the Bush administration starts enforcing the immigration laws of this country, fining employers who hire illegals and securing the ports and borders and deporting the TWENTY MILLION ILLEGALS; there will never be a victory in the "war on drugs", there will never be a victory in the "war on terrorism" and there will definitely never be "homeland security!" Deport the illegals, Ike did it, so can Bush!

Robert Navarrette is almost never right on this issue but lately he has been making a little bit of sense. For years he was nothing but an illegal immigration apologist.

We will never solve this problem until we start treating the criminals who are hiring illegals like the criminals that they are.

The people that hire illegals should be serving hard time.

"No country that is proud of itself should build walls" - V. Fox

Depends on the purpose of the particular wall in question. Certainly a nation that builds walls to keep their populace incarcerated within - the Berlin Wall, for example - isn't proud of itself. But a nation that builds walls to keep terrorists/criminals out is another matter entirely -- that's a nation that chooses to retain its pride and sovereignty.

Excellent - could not have said it better. I am afraid we are up against a political agenda that does not protect America from this invasion, the 'legalized' breaking of immigration laws, the destruction of the meaning and importance of citizenship, and the total neglect of the rights and tax dollars of REAL AMERICAN CITIZENS in this country.

The statements of Fox should classify him as what he is -- a crook, an opportunist, a complicit criminal, and an alien who has NO RIGHT to complain or dictate to the will and rights of Americans. What a hack. Is he playing Bush like a fiddle? This is a situation that needs attention from every American.

I agree. As long as people hire the illegals they will continue to cross the border. Fine employers! And if the clowns in D.C. ever come to that realization then we might, just might get our country back!

The Bush administration has had three and a half years to secure the ports and borders, fine employers who hire illegals and deport the twenty million illegals roaming about the country unabated. And the Bush administration has done ZERO, ZIP, NADA!

"No country that is proud of itself should build walls ... it doesn't make any sense," Fox said.

Mr. Fox no country that is proud of itself would push its problems on its neighbor, allow corruption to run rampant within its borders, refuse to educate itself, or take responsibility for it own people. Once you fix the little foibles in your country then come talk to me about the foibles in my country. Until then SHUT UP and take your criminals back. Mexico is looking more and more like Cuba every day.

I'm glad someone's finally speaking out against this outrage.

My neighbor has erected a wall that prevents me from accessing his swimming pool. At last a World Leader has spoken out against this blatant form of discrimination.

And now that I think about it, there's also a wall around the local sports arena. They actually expect you to pay to get in, and then you have to leave when they tell you to. This has to be stopped!

I could care less what Fox "thinks" about America.
If he was doing his job, we wouldn't have TWENTY MILLION OF HIS PEOPLE ROAMING ABOUT OUR COUNTRY ILLEGALLY!

Fox should clean up his house before he starts criticizing others!

The last time I said anything about this vile statement, my post got pulled.

This time, I'll be a bit nicer.

Dear Vicente,

____________ Off!

I saw Ari Fleischer at the Nixon library last week. He said that everywhere he goes, people bring up the border issue and that it is overwhelmingly the #1 problem they have with the President.

I am disappointed that the administration isn't responding to the citizens. We are all going to pay the bill for this eventually.

Walls are for either keeping things (or people) in or keeping them out. If you have no desire to do either, then no it doesn't make sense.

The Bush Admin will never enforce the immigration laws.

GW knows there would be an immediate impact on the prices of some things and that these price increases would be very visable to all Americans.

GW is not going to have the legacy he thinks he is going to have.
