Berkeley School Wants To Change Name From Jefferson

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Thomas Jefferson Elementary School might change its name because the third U.S. president was a slave owner.

The question of whether to rename the school has been debated for more than two years. Principal Betty Delaney on Monday released a list of potential new names -- one nominated by a student, the rest by adults.

The possibilities include Ralph Bunche, the black diplomat at the United Nations who won the Nobel Peace Prize, and farmworker organizer Cesar Chavez.

"It's very clear that the name is offensive to a significant part of the population," said Marguerite Talley-Hughes, who sent her three children to Thomas Jefferson, adding that she thinks it's reasonable to want a name that is not offensive to some in the community.

Parents, students and teachers must first vote on a new name, then take a second vote on whether to replace Jefferson with the new name.

The school board must approve any change.

Critics say the name change proposal has received more attention than more important issues.

The school should be renamed in honor of Robert Mugabe.

"It's very clear that the name is offensive to a significant part of the population," said Marguerite Talley-Hughes ...

So the Declaration of Independence must be offensive to people too, since, it was written by Jefferson, and surely it is distorted to his slavery owning views. (/sarcasm)

Given that it is a school in Berkley, I'd bet Jefferson wouldn't mind

Jefferson was your typical French-loving slave-owning rich politician, who claimed to be a man of the people. Very much like our modern Democrats like Corzine, Kerry, Soros, etc.

Rename the school after Alexander Hamilton, not one of those commies mentioned in the article.

We told you that "they" would be coming for you after they took everything southern away from us.

We have kept them to some extent at bay , however I am quite sure Californians will not have a backbone and bow to this sort of PC crap.

There is a notion-of-thought amongst liberals that begs for a definition and the closest I've come is "denialism". It is a psychological condition that allows one to make rules up as one goes along, revise history or anything for that matter and not be held accountable to rational argument or debate. Thomas Jefferson was who he was. He was also a man in the context of the age and was human. He's also recognized as a great thinker and person of good character, despite his foibles. These are things the left doesn't want you to know. They want you to be aware of Che Guevera and their other twisted icons.
